Finished Basement...

Anyone ever finish there basement? Im in the process of doing mine. Almost have all the walls built, gonna start to wire it soon. Couple questions for those that have them.

1)Any good ideas for a wet bar? Been looking online for different designs. Just looking for more ideas or pics if possible.
2) What did you do for a ceiling? drywall or drop ceiling?
3) Anything you did you wish you did different or added? i just

Thanks for any comments/suggestions.

drop ceiling or not depends on if you can afford it.....as in how deep ur basement is and if drop celing would be too low..for a tall person to walk around!

tip2: if you can plan and buy from one place and have your drywall delivered! Even if the delivery is $50 its well worth it. moving in 50+ sheets of drywall is no fun. those 14 footers have a life of their own!

tip3: if ur finishing ur basement get a CHECK valve for the sewer. just a flapper which allows flow out but not back in!

u already have a sump pump going yes?

Thanks for reply.

I have full 8' high basement. If i were to "drop" it, it would only be about 3" below that other than the ducts, which i have to box in.

Drywall is not a problem, acutally already have it down there (yeah, it did suck carrying it in.) It took 40 sheets. (finishing around 1000 sq ft., leaving some unfinished)

I do have a sump. i will look into the Check valve.

Again , thanks

Go with the drop ceiling bro. If you ever have to do additional wiring or plumbing or whatever it is easy access. I have torn many a basement drywall ceiling up. DO NOT DO IT if you can

Wet bar----keep it pretty simple if you can. If you can put into one the corners do it. An L shaped bar is sweet. I could send you some pics of mine if you want to see it.

Anything different-- allow room for a bar frig and especially an ice maker so allow for plumbing and drain hook up to that. An ice maker is a huge minus for me

As far as electrical goes....put plugs/tv/tele connection anywhere you might even remotely want it the future. Also..make sure you know what your doing as far that goes. If you don't,get a professional. I have also seen many a fuked up basement that I sure as shit couldn't sleep well at night

Yeh, doing it all myself (with my Dad) My dads is the brains of the operation. He is super handy. Only thing i might sub out is the drywall finishing.. I can do it, but its time consuming, and i can get a guy we know to do it for 350, which i thought was super reasonable.

Thanks for the reply. Aprreciate it.

That is exactly what my dad has been telling me about the drywall. Im screwed if i have a problem down the road. Leaning towards drop ceiling.

I definetly want to have a fridge down there, not sure of the size though. I was thinking like a mini fridge, about 3 ft high, but those dont make ice. I will look into this. I will definetely have the plumbing set up to have this feature for sure. The big concern for me with the bar is cabinets/countertop/glass. Not sure exactly what i want to do on the back wall. Yeah, if you had pics you could post, that would be sweet. Always open to ideas.

I should be good with electrical. My dad knows exactly what hes doing. I bought a chit load of boxes for outlets/switches, cable and phone, never can have enough of these. One more question, what about lighting? Best to just install a bunch of can's or use some kind of trac lighting. I dont wanna use them ugly 2*4 flourescent lights, they look cheap.

Dry wall is best.I personally think drop looks cheesy.Don't popcorn either if you don't have to.Just make sure you have plenty of lights and outlets you can never have to many IMO.As for bars I have only refinished 1 with a bar and it was a long time ago so styles have changed. Now if you were doing a home theater down there we could talk.

for lighting I suggest a mix, track lighting and pendants can look nice together. I agree that the 2x4 flours look cheap, My basement's had them forever...my dad and I changed it to track lighting last year and its not as bright because we just replaced the two fixtures instead of three, we just got rid of the third, but it's all the lighting we need since there's a 55G aquarium I put in, and the tv + lamps and computers...

give us some info as to what style basement you're doing and lighting options ...

Real men do NOT put a mini-fridge in their basment, my friend.

I am an architect/engineer and would agree with the advice regarding a drop ceiling.

so full blown 25cu fridge is best? lol.. My mini fridge can hold a case of 24 just fine. If i can drink that before i pass out to go upstairs and grab somemore cold ones, i have a problem. I was actually looking at a nice stainless steel fridge that fits right under the counter top. Not sure of exact size. I really dont wanna turn the bar into a full blown kitchen type area. Just some wall cabinets w/glass front, maybe a big piece of glass in middle with shelving for liquer, i dunno....

Drop ceiling seems to be best. Just for ease of getting at everything if need be. What do you guys recomend for flooring? All carpet? break it up with carpet and cer tile or hardwood?
