Football rule question...

When time is running out and the offense has no time outs, they complete a pass over the middle or run a running play and the guy is trying to get out of bounds to stop the clock....

Why doesn't he just throw the ball out of bounds? Throw it backwards so it is not an illegal forward pass. Wouldn't the clock stop and give the offense the ball where it went out of bounds? Why get tackled in bounds and keep the clock running when you could huck it out of bounds?

And you know? Even if this is illegal, what, there'd be a 10 second run-off? -- Still better than trying to rush the offense to the line to spike the ball.

There is no extra penalty for flinging the ball wildly to try to get it to a player who can then step out of bounds. If the ball sails out of bounds by itself, it's a dead ball and the clock continues to run.

How about when you're trying to run out the clock? You always run the ball right? Well, with what you have in bold it seems like you could choose a passing play, if nothing is open throw the ball out of bounds and chew up some clock.

that would be a incomplete pass, not a fumble out of bounds, there is a difference there .............

Isn't an incomplete backward pass the same as a fumble?
