Friend takes flight

My Grandfather told me years ago that if you die with 4 friends you are a very lucky man. It took me years to understand what he meant by this. A lot of people use the word friend loosely and that is something I have never do. I have 3 really good friends and yesterday one of them at the age of 46 took flight for a better life in the great unknown. I lost a guy I have been able to count on for years and the memories will live on forever. He had a catering business and would ask me to step in from time to time to help him cut meat. One of the best at preparing meat that would melt in your mouth. He started smoking meat with his own mix that was known thru out Northern California. He went to Reno Nevada and placed 1st with his smoked baby back ribs. Never will I forget all the parties he took me to. Gregg Miller AKA Chumley, will be missed. He did it his way and no one was going to change Chumley for who and what he was. He never saw a bottle he couldn't empty and in the end the bottle won. This guy spent hours with me in the hospital and we made a pack to see each other out of this place called earth. I spent the last hour of his life by his side with his only son. I told him to keep the barbecue burning and keep a light on. Death is an amazing thing. I watched my friend Chumley slip peacefully off into what I hope is a less painful place. Cheerish your friends. Your in a better place now Chum

Thank you so much for the comments. Chumly keeps me laughing even after death. His funeral will be held at the local pub, the pub that he closed a many of nights. He will have a memorial there this saturday. I laughed when I saw his plans for the day. Even in death he keeps me smiling. RIP Chumdog
