I heard it on Jim Rome this morning that Rick Tocchet and a police officer have been charged with operating an illegal gambling ring. In their 40 day investigation, over 1000 wagers exceeding $1.7M were placed by NHL players.

Rome went on to say the following, and I paraphrase:
When an NHL player gets down bigtime betting OTHER pro and college sports, he will want to dig himself out fast. He will do what he knows best, to control the outcome of an NHL game.

Are sports fixed???

Gretzky's Wife Cited in Gambling Ring

EWING, N.J. - Wayne Gretzky's wife and about a half-dozen NHL players placed bets — but not on hockey — with a nationwide sports gambling ring financed by Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet, authorities said Tuesday.

Gretzky, hockey's greatest player, is in his first season coaching the Coyotes and is a part-owner of the team.

Actress-wife Janet Jones was among those implicated, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because no bettors have been publicly identified.

I don't know if the games are fixed or not, but how is this proof of it? Because Jim Rome thinks it could happen?

there was a big deal made a few years ago about jagr and sports gambling...there was never any evidence he fixed games...so why does it necessarily mean it is here? and so far there has been nothing saying that the ring involved nhl games
