Is This A Good Deal?

Had a new air conditioner put in my 1986 El Camino 305 engine on 1-25-10. The last few days I keep hearing what sounds like a grinding noise when I turn it on. Took it back to Auto Kool who put it in. Frank the owner said you had a 1 year warranty on the compressor and a 90 day warranty on labor. Your compressor is bad. I said you don`t stand behind your work. He said I do, but there is nothing I can do except charge you for a new compressor, freon, labor etc. I said no way. He said what do you have in mind. I said I`ll pay you the $307.00 labor you charged me the first time and you replace the compressor, freon etc. He looked at me and by this time my eyes were bugging out. lol He said Ok that`s a deal. I said I`ll pick it up in the morning.

honestly? not a good deal at all.

I wouldnt pay him a damn penny.

first, what kind of crap parts he is putting in that fail after 90 days. Second, unless my math is off, you are just out of the 90 day labor warranty... If he is willing to let a customer walk over 2 days off the warranty limit then I would make sure he doesnt ever see any $$$ from me or anyone I know.

$300 bucks to fix something that you already had paid to fix and broke within 90 days? no way.

No I think it is a year and 3 months, he said 1-25-10, so I think that is fair. Dealership won't give you any better deal even on newer cars. I don't know of anyone who warranties A/C's for more than a year.

It's not that bad of a deal. The warranty is up, yes it should have lasted more then 1yr 3mo, but shit happens, would 1st look around and see if what you can get the parts for, then see if you can get someone to install for cheaper $$. Not knowing what kind of shop Auto Kool is, don't know if they are replacing with new parts or rebuilt....

You got taken, he ended up getting paid twice for the job he should have done right the first time. He also could have helped you by back dating the time you bought the part. My guess is he is going to turn it back in and say it never worked. In turn he gets his money back. Nice car by the way.

Its not that bad of a deal. Try making the same arrangements at a dealership service dept., it wont happen.

I think he would have a hard time back dating a part over a year. But if he is able to do that and convince the parts people it never worked I say more power to him.

I think it's just bad luck. Look the guy doesn't want to sell crappy parts because first off if the part breaks within 90 days he has to do free labor which he doesn't want and second it's bad for business. He knows it pisses people off and a small business doesn't want to lose customers. Which is why he is even doing this kind of deal. Like justdonating said try making a deal with a dealership and see how far you get after 15 months.

It is all original. Bought it brand new in 1986. Wanna buy this old classic clunker? Never mind I won`t sell it.
