I actually took a service on this in regards to DishNetwork/Google few months back. They asked me questions regarding features, pricing, etc. The survey seems to focus on what the average consumer would SPENT for this. Wheter I am gonna buy it or not is another story.

this thing definitely not a fad.

I'll bet anyone here that will overtake apple tv by February. It is a much better service and implementation.

All major TV manufacturers offering Internet TVs are doing it by including the Google TV operating system, so they are already making heavy inroads into the market.

Google TV is an open technology, unlike Apple. Which means anyone can develop applications, plugins, extensions etc for free. You cant do that for Apple. They have a much better connection technology, using HDMI cable for communication with receivers, tvs, etc.

GoogleTV also has many deals already signed to provide insane amounts of content. Netflix, Amazon, Sony, etc. Apple has no chance to compete.

The equipment is from Logitech, and yes is a little pricey, but there will be other manufacturers coming into the game, specially when they dont really have to deal with closed technology like Apple's.

Just research it and make up your own mind. I already placed mine on preorder through DishNetwork, $179.

apple has netflix which is the only one that matters. plus everyone is so locked into itunes that apple tv makes more sense. i like being able to play my music collection and view pics from iphoto on my tv. correct me if i'm wrong but i don't think google tv can do this. google probably uses picasa for pics. no idea what they use for music.

hey no problem man. I know you are a big apple fan boy, but you should take a break from drinking the kool aid

netflix the only one that matters? actually netflix is very good, but they dont carry everything. Specially now that networks are smarting up and pushing their own content themselves. Netflix will still get it, but probably delayed and not right away.

Not everyone is completely locked into itunes, but i get your point. Apple will eventually have to break and allow users to actually really own their content, allowing them to decrypt and convert to other formats. There is nothing stopping you from listening to your itunes music, the googleTV device basically becomes another 'computer' which means that you will be able to install itunes there and run it from your googletv.

Pictures? iPhoto is hardly the market leader (like iTunes is) so i dont buy this point. Google owns picassa but it hardly pushes it. Instead I can actually use any of the other repositories where i store my media, be it Facebook, photobucket, or any other service in the world, googleTV is a browser, not a locked in device.

Basically the major and real difference is that googleTV is an actual platform, which includes an open market and a browser to access anything and everything online, no limits to what you can do.

Funny thing is that the one industry that has driven technological innovation for the last few decades is the one that will also bring GoogleTV to the forefront. Yup, im talking about porn. Porn made VHS beat Beta, and now it will make GoogleTV king. Welcome free porn to TV without the hassle of recording from the internet or burning DVDs, or renting from cable provider.

I'll take GoogleTV anytime, i dont even consider appleTV a competitor.

I own an Apple TV and have since the original launch. Today's AppleTV offering is nice, but still limited. I'm an apple fan and have just about every Apple product around, but until Apple puts more time and effort into AppleTV, I think Google has them on this one. The Google TV allows one to install multiple open source applications versus Apple which limits you to not many apps. The latest version of the AppleTV is a stop-gap until they come up with something better to compete with Google TV. My 2 cents.....

yeah man no problem.

honestly, i say wait a few months.
I really think this thing is going to explode next year. I like to get in early on these kinds of things.

i see new manufacturers getting in for cheaper, maybe a slight delay because logitech may have a timeframe to recover their money, but the operating system can run on anything, which is why TVs have no problem running it. Both Samsung and Sony are doing it, word is Vizio will have it too.

yeah I'd like to see how Apple reacts. They have moved into 'evil' territory, and i could argue they are currently worse than Microsoft ever was as far as monopoly, control, market, etc. They are going to have to make a decision, continue to run a business model which blocks users and ties them to a platform/vendor or open it up to allow the community to provide content and allow users to truly own their media. Its a big decision because Apple has a lot of money invested into their platform and it relies on that income coming in the short term.
