Got a question, green sticker on helmet?

Don't know if this is the right forum for this question, but I didn't want to disrupt all the plays and discussion about lines and picks on NFL forum.

I realize that the green sticker on the helmet is the player with the "mic".

My question is, and actually there are several:

-Is there only one person per side of the football with a "mic"?
-If not, can there be two players, say on the defense, both "mic'ed" on the field at the same time?
-I have heard there is a time frame when they are actually "mic'ed up" in between plays, just want someone to explain that in more detail for me.
-Why is it important for the QB to know where the "mic'ed" player is on every down? (I always hear the QB yelling out the player number that is "mic'ed"

Thanks

Green sticker represents head phones in the helmet, no microphone. Only 1 player per side can be on the field with a green sticker on the helmet. Each team designates 3 players per side with head phones.

OK, I guess what I meant by "mic" was head phones. Why? Who talks to them and what is the purpose. And why is it important for the QB to know which player has the the head phones on the field?

My guess is a defensive coord. talks to the defensive player about the offensive set before the play? If that is the case, what is the time frame they have to tell this to the defensive player?

They are referring to the middle linebacker, or "Mike" position, named after Singletary, which are not easily visable in a 3-4 or 4-2(nickel) defense

the coordinators are talking down to the to set the defense, and then those guys relay the play/positions to the rest of the players on the field.

they can only talk to them up until a certain point on the clock, but im not exactly sure what that is ... may actually be when the ball is snapped until the play is finished, they are 'blacked out' and cant communicate.

what you are referring to with the 'miked' player has nothing to do with who has the green sticker on the defense ... as Chris said above, that is referring to the middle linebacker trying to see who may be coming on the blitz, etc.

hope that helps!
