Grand Funk (Railroad)'s 40th

Grand Funk Railroad is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year with a tour containing 40 dates. So far 12 dates have been booked. I'd love to see them at the Blues Festival here in Ottawa or another small venue.

(They will be without Mark Farner and Peter Frampton but that's ok).

From their site:

"Founding members Don Brewer and Mel Schacher have been joined by singer Max Carl (38 Special, Jack Mack and the Heart Attack, Max Carl and the Big Dance), lead guitarist Bruce Kulick (12 years with KISS and credits with Michael Bolton, Meatloaf, and Billy Squier), and at keyboards, Tim Cashion (Bob Seger and Robert Palmer).

Together, Brewer and Schacher have created a new dynamic and multi-talented five-piece band that will not only carry on the tradition of the Grand Funk hits, but also has the potential to create a brand new chapter in the legacy of Grand Funk Railroad."

A great band that the critics seemed to ignore
just the other day on Sirius Deep Tracks I heard "Inside Out" for the first time in ages, what a solid discography these guys have built over the years
hopefully we do some Canadian dates
Luke, I'm not aware of Peter Frampton ever being a part of or playing with Grand Funk Railroad, but speaking of personnel, Bruce Kulick is a great addition to GFR, underrated while a member of KISS

Upon further search...maybe not:

"In 1972 Grand Funk Railroad added a fourth band member, keyboardist Craig Frost. The band had requested Peter Frampton, late of Humble Pie to join them, but he wasn't available, due to a just-signed solo-record deal, so they asked Craig Frost, whom they knew from their time in the Pack (1968). This brought on a stylistic shift from their original garage-band based rock & roll roots to a more rhythm & blues/pop-rock-oriented style that was not universally accepted by their original fan base. Grand Funk released its sixth album of original music Phoenix in 1972. The band hired musician Todd Rundgren as a producer to refine their sound."

Hey Luke
looks like they asked him join way back, but it didn't happen
However, that wikipedia entry does go on to state that Peter Frampton did join Grand Funk Railroad for Bosnian relief concert in 1997
Interesting stuff!

I caught them here in Sioux City in 1999. Farner was still with them.

I had front row center seats. One of the best concerts I ever attended.

You are giving me more reasons to anticipate them in a date in Ottawa.

My top 3 GFR commercial hits are:

-Some Kind of Wonderful

-The Loco-Motion

-We're an American Band (But when that song hit the charts, the band I played in at the time covered it but sang it "We're a Canadian Band"--lol. It was pretty darn good. Cool stuff at the time...and Heavy.)

Other songs I like of them never made it into a hit.

I've got a bootleg DVD of them performing their hits at various festivals throughout their career. It sounds real awful but being there looks like a different story. They get the crowd right into it. So I understand what u mean.

Oakas--

The State of Iowa Rocks. I know this cuz my bootlegger has an abundance of concert bootleg DVDs from that state...down to the 1960's all kinds of artists.

I bought today April Wine in Cedar Rapids, IA (Sept 24, 1982). It's ok but I'm hunting for April Wine in the 1970's stuff.

Lukester. Can you hook me up with the bootlegger? I am looking for some Mountain bootlegs. i have a couple of them but always looking for more.

Also, if you are ever looking for bootleg television shows, I found a great site for them. I just bought the complete run of episodes of Wings for $15. Also got Dragnet complete run for $15.

not Grand Funk without Mark Farner. It's like the Stones without Mick Jagger.

Fave GFR tune was always "I'm Your Captain"

Seth: Fogell, this ID says that you're 25 years old. Why wouldn't you just put 21, man?
Fogell: Seth, Seth, Seth. Listen up, ass-face: every day, hundreds of kids go into the liquor store with fake IDs, and every single one says they're 21. Pssh, how many 21 year olds do you think there are in this town? It's called f*cking strategy, alright?

I'm off tomorrow so I will go see him in the morning. He has two stores. One of them is just a block away from my house. He sells most bootleg DVDs at $19.95 + tax; 2-DVD set at $24.95; and some odd ones at $9.95...I don't know if he ships to the USA but even if he does not sure if it will pass customs. If he ships I will link u tomorrow. If not you'll have to be patient that I get the proper equipment and I learn how to burn before I send any to u directly.

I'm not into TV shows, only music concerts/docs and war movies/docs.

Only DVD I have of Mountain is "Sea Of Fire" and it's an official release documentary but not easily found. I bought it for $18.95 at his shop after I had seen the triple bill concert Mountain/April Wine/Deep Purple on June 19, 2005 where they were selling it for $25.

So true that it's not the same without MF but it's as close as it'll get.

They just released a CD/DVD set and it's on it's way from where I ordered it. Supposedly it very good. Looking forward to it.

I'm sending the info to Jack (as I can't post his e-mail as a Forum rule) and he will re-direct it to you.
