A great iPad app
Splashtop
It's you can control your main computer from iPad. I tried gotomypc and it was not great and had a monthly fee. This one $2 one time. Works perfectly.

what are some reason why you would want to do this? Is it just to access your files?

Yeah that's the biggest reason. It's so easy to access files or maybe a program on your computer, microsoft outlook - anything really. For me if I went somewhere would always have to bring the laptop, now on somethings the ipad is good enough
