Heat Related...Sad news from GA...

Two Georgia high school football players die - ESPN

Associated Press

ATLANTA -- Two Georgia high school football players have died, one of them after he collapsed while leaving the field after practice.

The Henry County schools superintendent's office confirmed Wednesday that 16-year-old Forrest Jones, a student at Locust Grove High School, died Tuesday night at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Jones had been hospitalized since Monday when he collapsed while leaving the field. His father, Glenn Jones, says doctors told him the collapse was heat-related.

In Lake City, Fla. a Georgia teen attending football camp died following practice Tuesday morning.

Columbia County authorities say 16-year-old Don'terio J. Searcy of Fitzgerald High School was found unresponsive in his cabin. He was transported to a hospital, where attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

and in SC

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Authorities are investigating the death of a 14-year-old South Carolina high school football player who collapsed following a weekend morning practice.

Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee said Tyquan Xavier Brantley, a freshman at Lamar High School, died at a hospital late Saturday.

Hardee says tests are being conducted to determine if the death was heat related or from another cause. The heat Saturday afternoon rose to 101 degrees, a near-record, according to the National Weather Service.

"We are heartbroken at this terrible tragedy," Dr. Rainey Knight, superintendent of the school district, said, according to the Florence Morning News.

Darlington County School District spokeswoman Audrey Childers said it was the team's second day of light practice in helmets but no pads. Brantley was walking off the field when he started to complain about cramps and then collapsed, Childers said in the News' online report.

Childers said players were on the field about an hour and got a five-minute water break every 20 minutes. She said the team resumes practice Monday night.

Hear more & more of this each year. Never use to hear about this sort of tragedy. Wonder what the cause is?? Can we say it is hotter than it was 30yrs ago? Are coaches pushing players more & more? Are kids sitting inside playing video games all summer then their body doesn't know how to react to extreme heat? I think the latter. Got a 14yr old step-son, that's what he does.

This heat wave has been one of the more brutal ones of all-time where I'm at in Savannah. Plus with the humidity down here being close to 100% as well some days it really makes it stressful on your body to keep hydrated.

I saw somewhere it's been over 100 degrees 30+ days in a row in Dallas. That shit is no joke. They should portions of practices inside.

When are people going to learn? The human body can only tolerate so much, especially with younger kids and the elderly. There is absolutely NO need to conduct practices or any kind of training in 95+ degree heat. Senseless and reckless if you ask me.....

a few miles from our school here in ohio a kid dropped at a local school practice and is in critical condition in the hospital. The kid weighed around 280 pounds. Scary stuff. Thoughts and prayers to him and family. These kids need to remember to hydrate hydrate hydrate. And coaches have to make sure to keep giving the water breaks.. this isnt the 70s anymore where water is for pussies...
