The president of Oaksterdam University and an Oakland City Council member helped cut a red ribbon strung across the doorway. But this is no ordinary university. It trains students to work in California's booming medical marijuana business. Its mission is to build support for the movement to legalize cannabis.

The college has expanded so quickly since it opened in 2007 that it outgrew its two previous spaces. Its new campus is a three-story, 30,000-square-foot building where it can enroll up to 100 students in its three-month course..........................




Supporters of the measure have collected 680,000 signatures, far more than the 433,971 required. Lee plans to submit the petitions this month and hopes to qualify for the November ballot. The university's old building a block away will become campaign headquarters.


Indeed, politics and business are intertwined at Oaksterdam. Students receive instruction in the law, politics and advocacy as a prerequisite for taking horticulture, for example.

Other classes include "cannabusiness," dispensary management, distribution, patient relations, cooking with cannabis and making hashish. Graduates receive a certificate that can help them get a job at one of the many medical marijuana dispensaries in California.

The school grows dozens of plants as part of its teaching program but complies with the state's medical marijuana law by serving as the cannabis provider for a patient who has multiple sclerosis.

About 6,000 students have attended the school, Executive Chancellor Dale Clare said. The university has opened satellite campuses in Los Angeles; Sebastopol, Calif.; and, most recently, in Michigan.

Requirements for Graduate Admission

Listed below are the minimum requirements set by the Graduate School. Department requirements may be more rigorous. Be sure to check the graduate program's web site for application requirements, deadline dates, testing requirements and for further details and instructions.

Requirements vary by graduate program - Bachelor's Degree - A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or proof of equivalent training in a foreign institution. NOTE: The Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science degrees from India and Pakistan are three-year programs and are not considered equivalent to the U.S. bachelor's degree. If you hold one of these three-year degrees you are not eligible for admission to graduate school.

3.0 GPA - upper-division - A grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or comparable grade point average in upper-division work (junior- and senior-level courses) and in any graduate work already completed.

If you feel that your grade point averages or test scores are not valid indicators of your ability, you should explain your concerns in a letter to the graduate adviser of the program to which you are applying.
Official Test Scores (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, IELTS) The Educational Testing Service (ETS) code for the University of Texas at Austin is 6882. Test scores sent to this code are made available to all graduate departments.

Subject matter preparation -Records should reflect that the applicant has received adequate subject preparation for the proposed graduate major.

Departmental requirements - This includes such items as statement of purpose, writing samples, portfolios, etc. Check with the graduate program to which you are applying for their specific requirements. See list of graduate programs.

Letters of recommendation - Letters of recommendation are required for almost all applications to graduate school. Most graduate programs use our online recommendation system. Check with the graduate program to which you are applying to determine how to submit your letters.

Certification of Financial Responsibility - While this form is not required for consideration of your application for admission, it is necessary for preparation of the immigration document (Form I-20 or Form DS-2019) for The University of Texas at Austin. You may download this form from the International Office's web page.

New Jersey's outgoing governor signs medical marijuana bill into law on last day in office

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine has signed legislation granting chronically ill patients legal access to marijuana.

Corzine's office said the governor signed the bill late Monday, his last full day in office. Gov.-elect Chris Christie will be sworn in Tuesday.

New Jersey is the 14th state to allow patients with diseases such as cancer, AIDS, glaucoma and multiple sclerosis to use marijuana to alleviate their pain and other symptoms.

The legislation allows for dispensaries to be set up around the state where patients with prescriptions can access the drug.

Growing marijuana at home will remain illegal, as will driving while high.

Assembly sponsor Reed Gusciora says New Jersey's medical marijuana law is the strictest in the country.
