How do Blackouts work?

Here's the question. My buddy Monroe Waffle and I are discussing the blackout scenario in Indianapolis and how this comes into play with the Indy 500. For those that don't know, the Indy 500 is Not shown live in the Indianapolis area. It's shown later that night at like 7pm. I had always watched it live in Louisville, but when I came to Indy and went to a 500 party, we had to listen to it on the radio. Monroe Waffle thinks that all major sporting events are blocked out in that area. I said no way, but I wasn't 100% sure. You guys from major sporting event areas let me know how it is. He was thinking that they block the Ky Derby in Louisville and I said no way does this happen. Any help on this would be appreciated. I understand the NBA, NFL and college season stuff and maybe why they do it.

The only time we have blackouts in the bay area is when the Raiders play at home because they do not sell out. That does not sound right!!!! Why the hell can't you watch it live in Indy???? Do they show it at the local bars??

I have been 4 times. People find it hard to believe that it's not shown on local TV in Indy. I was saying that I bet it's the only MAJOR Championship that's blacked out. He was thinking that the Daytona 500 was blacked out in Daytona, Fla. He has grown up in Indy, and assumed that other events were the same. I say that this is one of the only places that would block it out. Thanks for the ticket info though.

I know, It's really weird, huh? People in Indy and the surrounding 50 miles have never watched the race on TV live. Some bars might be able to have a card or some other special hookup, but that answer I believe is no. Stupidest thing I have ever heard of.

I would agree that watching it is no thrill, but listening is only fun to me if I have drawn the driver that is on the lead lap............

Blackouts depend on the language negotiated between the league (the IRL , in this case) and the TV networks when the broadcast contract is signed. Blackout rules vary from league to league and TV contract to TV contract, but usually involve a distance radius from the event, and other things, such as regionally negotiated TV networks, etc..........

OK, with that being said, do you know of another major sporting event that is blacked out in it's home town? Not talking about regular season ......Masters, Ky Derby, Super Bowl, NCAA Football and Basketball championships, World Series, Daytona 500 etc......
