Man, 20, dies after drinking bet: police

VANCOUVER (CBC) - A drinking contest went horribly wrong when a young man died of what police believe was alcohol poisoning on the weekend, RCMP in Burnaby, B.C., said Wednesday.

Police officers were called to a North Burnaby residence Saturday morning and found the 20-year-old's body on the floor, RCMP Cpl. Alexandra Mulvihill said.

Investigators believe the man had been drinking with friends the night before, consuming 10 bottles of beer before tackling a large amount of whisky, Mulvihill said.

"Two friends thought they would enter into a bet of fortune in regards to whether or not this one male could chug a 26 [ounce] whisky. Unfortunately, this is the tragic result of the bet," Mulvihill said in a telephone interview.

Police have not released the man's name but believe he died as a result of "acute alcohol poisoning," she said.

RCMP are advising young people not to indulge in excessive amounts of alcohol. The new school year starts next week and there are likely to be many house parties.

"Everything sounds more appealing and more fun after a couple of drinks so we're just appealing to people to really watch themselves and take care of each other and look out for each other," Mulvihill said.

Young people need to resist peer pressures and refrain from doing things that they know aren't right, she said

"If you're a friend who sees somebody who may be getting into a bit of trouble ... assist that person and say, 'Enough is enough.'"
