Hurricane Ernesto

In anticipation of the approach of Hurricane Ernesto later this week, evacuation of visitors to the Florida Keys has been ordered. No watches or warnings are currently effect, but a hurricane or tropical storm watch may be issued later today.

Meanwhile, minimal Hurricane Ernesto (75 mph) is nearing the southwest Peninsula of Haiti where hurricane warnings remain in effect. Farther west, a tropical storm warning and hurricane watch remain posted for Jamaica; a hurricane watch is in effect for the Cayman Islands. With Ernesto expected to swirl into eastern Cuba tomorrow, a hurricane warning is now effect for the eastern portion of that island nation.

Latest forecast data indicate that a trough of low pressure aloft moving across the central United States will be a bit stronger than previously thought. This will create atmospheric steering currents that will eventually put Ernesto on a more northerly track. Thus, by early Tuesday, the hurricane could be swirling into the Straits of Florida on a beeline for the Keys.
