This must be a part of some nonsensical religious ritual they have in that part of the world huh? If snake kills child, It is Shiva's way of indicating that child was not worthy of life according to the principles of kharma. However if snake does not kill child, then child is declared to be worthy of life.

Or on second thought, perhaps it is just an innovative new approach to solving the problem of overpopulation they have in India. Boy it sure sucks to be second-born in some parts of the world.
