Iconic WWE announcer ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund dead at 76

Legendary pro-wrestling ringside interviewer “Mean” Gene Okerlund has died, World Wrestling Entertainment announced Wednesday. He was 76.

Okerlund was a familiar face and voice for generations of wrestling fanatics, chronicling the exploits of larger-than-life figures including Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage.

Okerlund was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006.

Okerlund was a legend in the wrestling world who was beloved by both the fans and the wrestlers.

He forged many close friendships with the people he interviewed, including Hulk Hogan and Bobby Sheenan. He even served as best man at the Iron Sheik's wedding.

It was Jessie Ventura who nicknamed Okerlund 'Mene Gene', a name many found ironic for the man that many considered to be the friendliest person in wrestling.

Oklerlund began making a name for himself in the sports world in the 1970s as he started working as an interviewer for the American Wrestling Association.

It was there that he interviewed the likes of some of wrestling's biggest stars, including Hogan and Heenan.

Okerlund moved to the WWE (then known as the World Wrestling Federation) in 1984, where he started providing ringside commentary for hit shows including Tuesday Night Titans and All-American Wrestling.

And Okerlund wasn't all talk. In 1984 the legendary announcer joined Hogan to face off against Mr Fuji and George Steele.

Okerlund hadn't actually planned to fight, but the referee mistook Hogan's high five for a tag and sent him in the ring.

He quickly got out of the way of his opponent and tagged Hogan back in before pinning Mr Fuji for the win.

Okerlund made WWE history when he was selected to sing the National Anthem at the very first WrestleMania in 1985.

He moved from the WWE to World Championship Wrestling in 1993, acting as lead interviewer until 2001 and getting back into the ring two more times.

Okerlund returned to the WWE in 2001, even appearing on its original reality show Legend's House.

He made his last appearance on WWE TV in January 2018, interviewing AJ Styles on the 25th anniversary episode of Raw.

Okerlund leaves behind his wife Jeanne, who he married in 1964, and two children.

Watch literally any interview he did with Randy Savage and marvel at the fact that not only did he never break, he kept the interview from devolving into utter insanity.

Rest in peace, an absolute legend.

I remember him from the old AWA days.
He was a voice of my childhood

He spent a great deal of his life living in Minnesota. I used to work for a company called Sims Security, so I would work a lot of the old AWA matches, He was a fixture around there. The crowds for those matches back than were as loud as I have ever seen at any event.

Little known fact, His son Todd played hockey 4 years at the University of Minnesota, played briefly in the NHL and was a member of the 1988 U.S Olympic team

No one did the role of their profession any better than him

RIP
