Indoor football player dies after head-to-head hit
ESPN.com news services DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A player for the Daytona Thunder of the World Indoor Football League died Monday night after a head-to-head collision with an opposing player. According to media reports, Javan Camon, 25, was trying to tackle a ballcarrier for the visiting Columbus Lions in the fourth quarter when another Lions player blocked Camon and they smashed against each other, head to head. The Columbus (Ga.) Ledger-Enquirer identified the player throwing the block as wide receiver Juval Winston. Daytona Beach Police Lt. Greg Grayson told the Orlando Sentinel that the blow knocked Camon unconscious. Paramedics and doctors attempted to revive Camon on the field for 10 minutes before he was taken by ambulance to Halifax Regional Medical Center. According to EVAC ambulance spokesman Mark O'Keefe, Camon had gone into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead on arrival. "When he hit the ground, he was not moving at all. He was lying there too long before anything happened. I don't think they could revive him at the time," said his teammate, Kijafa Crumble, according to WFTV-TV's Web site. Grayson told the Sentinel that Camon was not bleeding or showing other outward signs of trauma. "This is merely a play on the field. It's strictly an accidental death," he said. Camon played at the University of South Florida and was a starter and team captain his senior season.
