Interesting email I got today....

Like everyone, I get 15 emails a day that people I barely know or care to know forward to me and everyone in their adress book.....However I got one today that had some real merit. If I was more computer savy and really gave a sh*t I would copy and paste, but in lieu of that: the gist of the email was that most all of us who are employed have had to submit to drug testing. This particulary struck home with home with me because I recently changed jobs and my new employer does hair testing, and since I cut my hair weekly at a "2" on the sides and a "3" on the top, they cut hair from my armpit to prove that I haven't partaken in the last 180 days. Never mind that I have worked my ass off and never been unemployed since graduating college the last 18 years, let alone ever ask for any help from our government to support my family. So why don't we insist that everyone getting paid not to work, or on any public assistence is drug tested. How much smaller would the public welfare rolls be? Worth some thought? What do you think?

Very good point, and I'd take it a step further. Standard drug testing for public assistance/welfare - but completely outlaw drug testing for any job. If you're getting the job, you've proven you can do it previously or there's some other good reason you're being hired. If your ability to do the job is affected by the fact that you smoke weed at night, you will (theoretically) not get the job in the first place. If you can do the job, why does it matter that you do drugs? It's an invasion of privacy.

But if you're on public assistance, that means I am paying for your drugs (along with everyone else) and I aint doing that!

Drug testing is necessary for certain types of employment but it is overused due to employer liability issues. Insurance carriers have recognized that drug free employees are generally healthier and less prone to workplace accidents. This is purely a money driven issue.

The Georgia state legislature in 1990 prompted in part by the federal indictment of Washington, D.C. Mayor Marion Barry on drug charges, passed a new law that required anyone who wanted to run for election for any high office in the state of Georgia, governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, commissioner of agriculture, state legislature, including judges from the Supreme Court on down had to pass a drug test first, specifically they had to submit a certificate showing that they are going to a state-approved laboratory, a doctor's office, given a urine specimen, passed the test within 30 days of filing for the election.

I am far from a liberal...but drug testing those who receive government aid is a slippery slope.....

I think a better determination is thru the compliance to determine who can work over who will work

but I understand the frustration

I mean look at the success the IRS has in collections over who will pay taxes over who wont...why cant we broaden their powers to include earning potential
