Internet gambling bill update

Just heard from one of my senators Mark Dayton on this and he doubts the bill will come before a vote on the Senate floor this session

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bill to ban Internet gambling is facing some opposition in the U.S. Senate and will not come up for a vote before the chamber takes its August recess, an aide to the U.S. Senate majority leader said on Thursday.
Backers of the legislation had hoped to push it through the Senate quickly this month following the arrest in the United States of David Carruthers, the chief executive of BETonSPORTS on charges of racketeering and conspiracy.
Carruthers is scheduled to appear at a hearing in U.S. district court in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday to determine if he must remain in jail until his trial.
However, an aide to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said that lawmakers were still working on the bill and would not be able to hold a floor vote before the Senate recesses for its August vacation.


The Senate bill is virtually identical to legislation overwhelmingly approved earlier in July by the U.S. House of Representatives. It would prohibit most forms of Internet gambling and make it illegal for banks and credit card companies to make payments to online gambling sites.
The Republican-backed bill has been criticized by some as an election-year appeal to the party's conservative base.
Supporters of a crackdown on Internet gambling say legislation is needed to clarify that a 1961 federal law banning sports betting also covers an array of online gambling.

I tell you what, I'm a registered Republican, a conservative, and a Christian, and I bet on sports. There's no difference between betting on sports on betting on the stock market, condoned as "investing in stocks". My Representative (Dave Weldon) voted for the bill in the House, and he will not be getting my vote in November. If my Senators vote for this bill, they won't be getting my vote next November either. And I've sent them email stating such.

The email my Senator sent me said he doubted it would come before the Senate for a vote in this session. I don't know how the Senate calendar operates, someone else can probably answer that better than I can.

that is the nature of the House...they pass huge numbers of legislation because it is easier to get things on the floor for a vote...the rules are built that way

The Senate is done another way

as I said they mainly pass bills based on existing government agencies..Medicare, Tax, defense spending, and such

I agree this bill will die in session

Gerk I have heard and read the same thing. Lets hope that happens though not sure what that means for next year or session but one thing at a time.

What are you kidding me? After what just happened with BOS most everyone is very concerned.

a couple sites have discontinued US customers, a sportsbook & a poker site from what i've heard

i haven't heard about this, not saying its not true, just haven't heard anything about it yet.
