Issiah thomas to FIU? lmao

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/brea...ry/997814.html

Actually quite the pull is FIU could pull that off

FIU men's basketball coach Sergio Rouco was re-assigned to another position within the FIU athletic department on Monday morning.

By Monday afternoon, several names -- including Isiah Thomas -- had been discussed as possible replacements.

In five seasons as men's basketball coach, Rouco led the Golden Panthers to a 55-94 record. This past season FIU went 13-20.

''We appreciate the five years Sergio Rouco gave to FIU as its men's basketball head coach but we feel that it is now time to move in a different direction,'' FIU athletic director Pete Garcia said. ``Sergio will remain in our organization in a different capacity and we look forward to continuing to work with him to further build the FIU program.''

In Rouco's first season (2004-05), he led FIU on its deepest postseason run since 1998.

FIU reached the Sun Belt semifinals in 2005 after going 13-17, but had not improved since then. The Panthers went 8-20, 12-17, 9-20 and 13-20 in the past four seasons under Rouco.

Garcia said Rouco's replacement could be named as early as this week.

And according to sources, he could be choosing from a pool of well-known candidates with NBA ties that includes Thomas. Sources indicated that Reggie Theus, who has NBA coaching experience, and former NBA player Ed Pinckney also are candidates for the Golden Panthers job.

Virginia Commonwealth assistant and former Miami Northwest Christian High coach Tony Pujol and former FIU coach and current Miami Krop High coach Shakey Rodriguez also are being mentioned as candidates.

University of Miami assistant Jorge Fernandez is considered another possibility for the job.

Garcia declined to comment on the candidates.

Regardless of who the next FIU coach is, he will be asked to build a program that has not had a winning season since 1999-2000, when it went 16-14 under Rodriguez.

FIU's only NCAA Tournament appearance came in 1995 under coach Bob Weltlich. That season, the Golden Panthers lost in the first round to UCLA in Boise, Idaho.

The coaching change is the eighth out of FIU's 12 sports since Garcia became athletic director in 2006.

Former New York Knicks coach Isiah Thomas has accepted Florida International's offer to coach its basketball team, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com's Andy Katz.

Sources confirm that FIU made calls within the conference recently to check on the viability of hiring Isiah Thomas.

An official announcement is expected later Tuesday. Thomas' representative was in South Florida to finalize the deal, the source said.

FIU averages just under 900 people a game. Kind of slim pickens for Thomas to mull over, isn't it? Maybe he will allow feamles into the games for free, just like they do at, oops, I forgot. The basement is closed. Well, you guys know what kind of party I was referring to.

Friend of mine used to be a trainer for FIU. Gave us the scoop on undisclosed injuries and players sitting unannounced. Was nice!

Dude's with the Mariners now.
