K-Feding the WWE coffers

K-Feding the WWE coffers

UPDATED: 2006-11-11 01:25:56 MST

By TJ MADIGAN

"I want a divorce," yelled a stone-faced Linda McMahon back in 2001, as part of a WWE storyline which went absolutely nowhere and didn't draw a dime.

But when Britney Spears issued that same demand (by text message, reportedly) on Tuesday afternoon, WWE executives must have seen dollar signs dancing before their eyes.

The Spears divorce is quite possibly the biggest celebrity gossip story of the year -- it actually transcended the pages of People Magazine and became front-page news in mainstream publications around the world.

But first, a little background for those who don't know their Brangelina from their Bennifer.

Pop princess Spears has finally decided to dump her husband of two years, Kevin (K-Fed) Federline, filing for divorce and sole custody of the couple's two children.

Federline is expected to fight for custody and a bigger severance package than the pre-nup allows.

And right in the middle of this impending media circus sits WWE owner Vince McMahon, whose insignificant decision to bring K-Fed onto Monday Night Raw last month appears to have been a textbook case of 'Luck o' the Irish.'

Federline's wrestling involvement began with a one-off appearance at a WWE TV taping in L.A. to promote his rap CD. Typecast as an unlikeable, arrogant Hollywood wannabe (in other words, playing himself), he took part in a scripted confrontation with WWE champ John Cena and took a minor beatdown from Cena on live TV.

The tabloid media (which paints Federline as a talentless freeloader) couldn't get enough of seeing K-Fed getting smacked around. It got so much publicity an encore was inevitable.

Federline exacted revenge at the Cyber Sunday pay-per-view last weekend when he made a surprise run-in during the World title match, whacking Cena over the head with the belt, costing Cena the championship.

Which led to the announcement WWE had scored its biggest K-Fed coup -- Federline vs. Cena in a one-on-one match during the New Year's Day Raw.

WWE and the soon-to-be-ex Mr. Britney Spears were now joined at the hip in the eyes of the tabloid press -- two bastions of redneck America, working together to create easy fodder for late night monologues.

So when word of K-Fed's divorce exploded down the newswires Tuesday, WWE got plenty of publicity.

In fact, several prominent gossip writers have reported the WWE deal actually ignited the divorce proceedings, alleging Federline went nuts and started smashing up the couple's house after Spears laughed at a tape of his wrestling escapades.

Either way, it's all one big happy accident for McMahon and WWE. After years of desperate attempts to become less of a wrestling company and more of an entertainment conglomerate, the grappling group seems to have lucked its way into the centre of the ultimate celebrity media frenzy.

And with Federline's rap career and relationship with his Sugar Mama hitting the skids at the same time -- not to mention the free press McMahon could milk out of it -- don't be surprised if K-Fed's involvement with WWE morphs into more than a one-match deal.

The same thing happened when Robin Givens laughed at a tape of Mike Tyson's boxing escapades.

Furniture was flying through the windows.
