The world's largest lake is the Caspian Sea, which spans five countries. It is 760 miles long, with an area of 143,550 sq. miles. It is large enough to accommodate the U.K. and the island of Cuba. Its maximum depth is 3,360 feet.
The largest area of sea ice is the Southern Ocean around Antarctica, which is covered with an area of ice bigger than Russia. Between 6.5 and 7.7 million square miles of ocean is covered by ice during the winter. The world's longest river is the Nile, which extends 4,145 miles in length, nearly twice the length of the Great Wall of China. The world's longest bay - in terms of shoreline length - is the Hudson Bay, with a shoreline of 12,268 kms and an area of 766,047 sq. kms. Measured by area, the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean is larger, at 1,350,240 sq. kms. The largest swamp is the Pantanal, located in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil. The swamp covers an area of 42,000 square miles and includes rivers, lakes, grasslands, forests, and wetlands. During the wet season, the Pantanal waters flood an area the size of Cuba. The world's largest cave is big enough to fit 10 747 jumbo jets end to end. The Sarawak Chamber, Lubang Nasib Bagus, in the Gunung Mula National Park in Malaysia is 701 meters long and 70 meters high. The world's deepest cave is Krubera, which is located beneath the Arabika Massif in Georgia. The cave has a measured depth of 6,824 feet. The deepest valley is more than three times deeper than the Grand Canyon. At 15,382 meters, the Yarlung Zangbo valley in Tibet could house a stack of 10 CN Towers. The Sahara in North Africa is the largest hot desert in the world. It measures 5,150 kms from east to west and it is between 1,280 kms and 2,250 kms long north to south. The complete area covered by the desert is about 5,760,000 sq. kms. Tambora, a volcano located on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, hold the record for the highest death toll from a volcano: An estimated 92,000 people were killed following the 1815 eruption. The highest death toll from a hailstorm occurred in 1888, when 246 people died during a storm in India. The Vredefort crater by Johannesburg, South Africa is the largest of about 150 known impact craters. It is 300 km across and was formed two billion years ago when an asteroid hit the Earth. The largest meteorite was 2.7 meters long and 2.4 meters wide and weighed 59,000 kgs. It was found in 1920 in Namibia.
