Lightning

Not sure how bad it is where you are but it's crazy down here in Florida. So many deadly stories

Yesterday we heard a huge boom and thought it struck our house. We were lucky but next door neighbor - not so much. They got struck and it burned a giant hole in their roof. Ouch!

We get a different kind of lightening here, which means its virtually Impossible for it to damage anything. Earthquakes are the big danger here though. Stay safe guys!

Our's here is called falk lightning. However after looking on wikipedia it doesn't have it listed, so thats probably a name we use instead of the correct term.

Been a light show here the past 2 days, especially yesterday evening and before daybreak today. Lightning was flashing every 15-20 seconds for periods here this morning. Wasnt right over my area but was close. 3 1/2 inches of rain about 20 miles from me yesterday, rained for 5 minutes at my house.

Noon news says 2 houses burned completely in the surrounding area due to lightning strikes yesterday and today.

Man in critical condition

By BROOKES MERRITT, SUN MEDIA

The Edmonton Sun

August 4, 2007

A bolt of lightning struck a 47-year-old Fort Saskatchewan man in the head on the Smoky Lake golf course yesterday - a freak accident that left the man in critical condition at University hospital.

"He was struck directly in the head and is listed in critical condition, but he has not been stabilized," Bart Goemans, spokesman for STARS air ambulance, said last evening.

A Capital Health spokesman confirmed hospital emergency staff would be keeping a close eye on the man's condition through the night.

The victim was taken by ambulance from the golf course to the Smoky Lake health centre, and later flown to Edmonton, Goemans said, arriving at hospital at 2:40 p.m.

The man was struck shortly after the noon hour.

A Smoky Lake resident photographed the man being carted away from the golf course by ambulance and said it looked like he'd been golfing with a group of others on the fifth hole as a swift-moving thunderstorm advanced.

A pair of burnt shoes lay near a stand of trees lining the fairway, indicating the surge of electricity travelled through the man's body and was grounded through his feet.

Two golf balls lay on the nearby green, a third just off the green.

Sources said the course manager had warned golfers on the nine-hole course of the impending storm prior to the lightning strike and had recommended players seek shelter.

The course manager was unavailable for comment yesterday and the course was closed shortly after the incident.

Storm coming our way right now, due to be here within the hour. Last report, this storm has accounted for over 6,000 lightning strikes within the past 60 minutes according to local news flash. Gonna be fun again today, LOL
