Looks like Houston may be in for a hurricane

Tropical Storm Edouard may strengthen, targets Texas

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Edouard continued westward and could reach near hurricane strength before hitting the Texas coastline near Houston Tuesday morning, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in its 4 a.m. CDT (0500 GMT) report Monday.

A tropical storm warning was in effect from the mouth of the Mississippi River westward to San Luis Pass, Texas. A tropical storm warning means the NHC expects tropical storm strength in the warning area within the next 24 hours.

The center of Edouard, with maximum sustained winds near 50 miles per hour, was about 185 miles southeast of Lafayette, Louisiana and about 295 miles east-southeast of Galveston, Texas.

The storm was moving west at nearly 9 mph with a turn to the west-northwest expected later today, the NHC said.

It expects the center of Edouard to be very near the upper Texas coast or the coast of southwestern Louisiana Tuesday morning.

Energy traders watch for storms that could enter the Gulf of Mexico and threaten U.S. oil and gas production facilities.

Commodities traders also watch storms that could hit agriculture crops like citrus in Florida and cotton in other states along the Gulf Coast to Texas.

You aint lying. Well we are going to get a little bit of a cold front later on in the week, down to 102 so we should be good.

But in all seriousness everyone stay safe in the gulf.

Looks like we dodged any real trouble. Currently in Houston, we have light rain and the wind speed is about 10 mph.

Edouard inland, beginning to weaken
The Weather Channel
11:07 a.m. ET 8/5/2008

Tropical Storm Edouard (60 mph) is swirling inland over extreme southeast Texas now and beginning to weaken.

As of 10 a.m. CDT, the center of Edouard was located about 40 miles west of Port Arthur, Texas, and moving toward the WNW at 15 mph.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect between Cameron, Louisiana, and San Luis Pass, Texas. The hurricane watch has been cancelled.

Heavy rain and gusty winds are expected to continue in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana over the next several hours. Rainfall of 3 to 5 inches is likely along the track of Edouard, although isolated totals of 10 inches are not out of the question.

Winds gusted as high as 68 mph at Sabine Pass North just after the center of the storm crossed the coast this morning. Winds will drop off as Edouard continues to churn inland, but a few power outages are still likely in some of the more vigorous rainbands.

Elsewhere in the tropics, both the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Basins remain quiet. In the western Pacific, Tropical Storm Kammuri is expected to make landfall in Mainland China west of Hong Kong on Wednesday morning (U.S. time).

not sure why storms get such headlines...big deal...they happen and to areas that have had them before...surely shouldnt be national headlines everytime a fricking storm is brewing...now if it kills thousands, then i guess the front page listing is warranted

I think it's because of this Rev:

Energy traders watch for storms that could enter the Gulf of Mexico and threaten U.S. oil and gas production facilities.
