Man on Fire was a superior film, but as far as giving an Oscar to Denzel Washington I'd have to say that him playing Alonzo Harris, a cruel, evil and corrupt cop, in Training Day was one of his best performances.

He played against type, choosing to diverge from the good everyman, heroic types he'd played previously in Glory, Malcolm X, Crimson Tide, Remember the Titans, et al., and this is what got him his golden statuette. When Academy voters saw him as this bad and brutal cop - and believed him - well, that transformation was amazing to behold.

Plenty of actors have received Oscars in less-than-worthy films, and this is one instance where the parts (the acting parts, that is) were worth more than the whole.

Man on fire was better even though Dakota fanning was a better actor than Denzel

Training day was good but was overrated.
