By Madeline Baro and Maya Bell, the Orlando Sentinel | Sun-Sentinel.com
4:40 PM EDT, September 13, 2007

A Margate man was named as a suspect in a shooting that left one Miami-Dade police officer dead and three others woundedThursday.

A large manhunt was underway for the suspect, identified as Shawn Sherwin Labeet, 25, who was last seen driving a 2007 four-door black Pontiac Vibe with a woman and two children in central Broward County, said police spokeswoman Cmdr. Linda O'Brien.

State driving records indicate Labeet's last address was in Margate.

Previous versions of this story misidentified the suspect shooter based on information received from law enforcement officials. The correct name of the suspect is Shawn Sherwin Labeet.

Police had initially given the wrong name of the suspect.

O'Brien said the officers were apparently shot by a high-powered weapon shortly before noon in the area of SW 280th Street and SW 143rd Court.

Mayor Carlos Alvarez, who spent 28 years as a member of the Miami-Dade Police, said one officer died.

"It's gut-wrenching. It makes you sick to your stomach,'' Alvarez said.

A female officer, who Police Director Robert Parker described as "diligent and hard-working," was in surgery.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said one of the officers was taken to Homestead Hospital, another was taken to Baptist Hospital and the third was air lifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

O'Brien said the two officers who remained hospitalized were expected to survive. No identities were released.

The shootings followed two other officers' shootings last month in neighboring Broward. One was killed, the other was badly injured.

O'Brien said the officers were conducting a burglary surveillance detail in the neighborhood when two uniformed officers tried to stop the car. The suspect got out and started shooting with what authorities believe was an AK-47 assault rifle, O'Brien said.

Two plainclothes officers working the burglary detail immediately came to their aid and were shot, too, O'Brien said. The suspect got back in his car and fled.

The suspect headed north in the southbound lanes of the turnpike, then apparently ditched his car at 283rd St. and SW 192nd Ave., O'Brien said. He was believed to be wearing a bullet-proff vest.

O'Brien said police have recovered a car and a weapon, but were not sure if they were involved in the case. She said Labeet was seen driving in Central Broward about 2 p.m.

"It's a very sad day for Miami-Dade County," said county Commissioner Dennis Moss.

A large force of Broward sheriff's deputies went to a Publix warehouse in Deerfield Beach in connection with the shooting investigation. Much of the surrounding area, including the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's printing plant, was closed off.

Agency officials would not say what exactly the deputies were doing, but said the Sheriff's Office was supporting Miami-Dade.

Also, the Southwest 10th Street exit ramp of I-95 in Deerfield Beach was shut down.

No other details were immediately available.

Several schools in the area were on lockdown due to the search, but there were no students affected since it was a teacher's work day. Parts of Florida's Turnpike also were shut down.

Researcher William Lucey and The Associated Press contributed to this story

Oh he was not AS far as I thought

Even still that is crazy, I always wondered how crazy it would be if you were framed for a murder or crime you didnt commit and your defense was invalid.

I've had nightmares about that

Shaq was busy saving cats in Bristol, CT lol
