March Madness means $3.5 billion in lost productivity for employers

The Business Journal of Phoenix - 9:21 AM MST Monday

Employers will lose about $3.5 billion in wages paid to workers over the next several weeks as employees scramble to fill out and track their March Madness brackets until the men's college basketball championship game is played April 3.
Research firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas finds that even people who do not follow college basketball for the entire season get wrapped up in the excitement of March Madness, which begins March 16.

The Chicago-based firm determined the nearly $4 billion loss by working with Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data and information from the Internet tracking firm Hitwise. It calculated the time spent by workers on the ESPN.com college basketball site last year was 13.5 minutes per day.
By the way local bosses, the University of Arizona is among the field of 65 teams making it to the Big Dance. In first round play, the Wildcats face the Wisconsin Badgers in Minneapolis March 17.
And college hoop fans will be able to view the games online for free this year at CBS Sports. Secure Computing Corp. (NASDAQ: SCUR) is out this week pitching its software system designed to manage what employees are doing on their computers during work hours.
Secure Computing is a San Jose, Calf.-based provider of computer security appliances/firewalls, strong authentication, content management and filtering solutions. For more info on this evil company, search elsewhere.].
Unproductivity....get out of here
