Miller and Coors brewing companies to merge
MILWAUKEE – Miller and Coors say they plan to join forces. The new company will be called MillerCoors. Leaders from both companies claim this merger will help them compete more effectively with the industry leader, Anheuser-Busch. Anheuser-Bush currently accounts for half of the U.S. market with brands such as Budweiser, Michelob and Bud Light. The new company will sell such brands as Miller Lite, Miller Genuine Draft, Coors, Coors Light and Molson Canadian in the U.S. SABMiller will own 58 percent of the company and Coors will own 42 percent and the two companies will have equal voting interest. SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing have signed a letter of intent to combine the U.S. and Puerto Rico operations of Miller and Coors, in a joint venture. The companies say the sale will result in a cost savings of $500 million which will come from reducing shipping distances, finding economies of sale in brewing operations, optimizing production and eliminating duplicate corporate and marketing services. Many in Milwaukee are wondering what this merger will mean for workers and everyone else in Milwaukee as the second and third largest beer companies in the country join forces. Miller Brewing Spokesperson Pete Marino says as far as the customers are concerned, nothing will change other than the name of the company. Marino says this is a way to improve Miller Brewing in a very competitive business. Marino says despite none of the Miller breweries closing, some people may lose their jobs. How many, at this point, is still unclear. Many are wondering, in a town known for its beer, if Milwaukee will lose its identity. “Over the years, Miller has had a number of different owners. I don’t think Milwaukee has lost any of its identity or vice versa. Miller has been a part of this community for 152 years and going and plans to be a part of the community for many years into the future,” Marino said. People in Milwaukee are also wondering if the merger will affect Miller Park and if the park will be renamed. Marino says the name will stay the same for next year, but after that, we do not know. The deal should be wrapped up in about nine months. Pete Coors, vice chairman of Molson Coors will serve as chairman of the new company. Molson Coors Chief Executive Leo Kiely will be new CEO of the company and Tom Long, CEO of Miller will be president and chief commercial officer. The companies said by combining their operations, they will be able to better compete with larger companies like Anheuser-Busch. They project they will have combined annual beer sales of 69 million barrels with revenue of about $6.6 billion. In a statement, Graham Mackay, Chief Executive of SABMiller, said, "We are excited by the enhanced prospects for growth and the considerable benefits to all stakeholders that this joint venture offers. Given the highly complementary nature of our U.S. assets, operations and geographic footprint, this is a logical and compelling combination that we expect will create significant value for shareholders while benefiting distributors, consumers, retailers and the market overall."
