they usually say you should never bet more than 5% of your bankroll on a game. they usually say to bet like 2.5%. i dunno, i usually just bet off gut feel and dont really bet more than i can afford to lose.

so like average bet should be like $125 bucks i guess with a 5000 dollar bankroll. but its just really gut feel and how much you think you can afford to lose if you do.

Personally I think alot of it has to do with the type of gambler you are. If your experienced and view this as an investment then the 5% rule on average is great. However if you are an ACTION JUNKIE as many of us are then you should really consider much less. It's not insane to suggest 1% on any one game at any one time because your gonna be inclined to bet way too many games and get yourself into far more chase situations. Everyone tries to convince themselves that they are an investor and not a junkie but the truth is about 95%+ of us are pure adrenelin action junkies.

I started off with a $10k bankroll and I told myself thats what I am able to lose without it hurting my pockets and I made my units $100 each. My theory is ty to usually bet each game the same amount at first, then when you are +Units then bet some games more then others but dont go crazy with it. If you really like a game then increase your units up by 2-4. Good Luck and if I was you I would make my units $50 each but then its your money.

Thanks

thanks for the segestions..... I consider myself a controlled bettor. Im doing this for an investment. I play a lot of poker so im really good at avoiding tilting (sports betting is a piece of cake to avoid tilting compared to poker). I usually just play poker for money but after a few years of studying lines and games I decided to put money into sportsbetting as well. I am a poor college student and I only have 200 dollars in my sports betting account so I've been betting $10 on all games (which satisfies the 5% rule). Id appreciate any futher tips on sports betting and money management. Thanks guys.

some things i like to remember: going 1-0 is more profitable than going 2-1, that parlays aren't worth the odds, and that anything can happen on any given day.

The best thing to do is to give yourself 100 wagers, so If you have a $5,000 roll your 1 UNIT would be $50. If you follow this and you are a good capper you will have a very little chance of going broke. Also as said in one of the other posts never have over 5% of your roll on 1 game.

Here's what I'd Suggest :

A Bankroll of $ 5,000 Divide by 4

Gives you $1,250
Then you can Base your plays on $ 1250 Bankroll
That's What you have

NOT $ 5,000
NOW , You Can wager 1% of $1,250 ( $12.50 , 2% =$25 , etc)

Every Month Keep track of your $ 1250.
When you're up , Roll it over into your $ 5,000
E.G.
You're up $ 500 you now have $ 5,500 / 4 = $1,375 instead of
$ 1250.
Now your 1 % = 13.75 instead of $12.50 ...

When you're down $ 500 , $ 4,500 / 4 = $1,125
Your 1% becomes less ...

For Poker , never risk more than 10% of your bankroll in any given
month .
Make a promise to yourself that you will always follow the Ten Percent Rule.

Promise yourself that you will not lose more than 10% of your bankroll in the same day. And when you sit down to a game, don?t buy in for more chips than represents 10% of you total bankroll.

If you make money, great. In the next session, your bankroll will be slightly larger, and you can buy in for more. If you keep winning, then you will be able to risk more, and keep winning by higher and higher amounts.

But if you are losing, either from sheer bad luck or from playing less than your best game, you won?t be crippled in a single session.

The worst thing that can possibly happen if you follow the Ten Percent Rule is that you?ll have a short, losing session, and have to put poker aside until the next day. And when you?re losing, isn?t that the best thing to do anyway?

So if you?re only going to risk 10% of your bank in a single session, what games can you play in? Well, you?ll probably start a great deal lower than you?re used to. If you have $1000 in the bank, you might be playing $5-$10 or $10-$20 limit, or maybe a $300 No Limit game, or a $200 tournament. Not anymore.

If your bankroll is $1000, then you have $100 to play with, which means that you are playing $2-$4 or $3-$6, or buying into a $100 cash game or tournament.

Think in terms of how much you can risk today, not how much you have total.

And only play at the level your bankroll can realistically afford.
The advantage of this is that you should never run out of bankroll. If you keep losing, you will simply play for smaller and small stakes until you find a game that you can beat.

Then, you can start winning again, and earn enough to get back to the levels at which you belong.

I know, I know. It isn't a lot of fun playing against $2-$4 players when you?ve been playing in $10-$20 games. But be honest. If you only had $1000 in your account, should you really be sitting at a $10-$20 table, where half of your bankroll is at risk in a single session? At $10-$20, it will usually take you about $80-$100 to see a hand to the river, which means that it only takes four or five losing showdowns to lose $400. Think about that.

Four or five bad beats, four or five times when you are outkicked, or your trips lose to bigger set. Is such a thing possible? You bet. And when you?re playing online, it is not only possible, but it can happen three to five times faster.

Money management is boring stuff. But it's good poker. Even for the best players, poker is a risky endeavor, and you have to protect your downside at all times. By holding back 90% of your bankroll, and only playing in games where you can buy in with the remaining 10%, you will be doing that.

And when you accumulate enough to get back to the $10-$20 games, you'll play them even better because you?ll be motivated to stay there.
