The best way to choose a place to move to is fold out a map tape it to the wall and throw a dart at it.Wherever it lands is your new home.

Honestly, since Katrina, there is a ton of office space cheap, even near the Superdome. I knew people a few months after the storm working in buildings where only a couple of 25+ floors were even occupied.

lol

My wife is super-tempted to carry a purse a lot of times, but she knows the drill.

I tend to wear cargo pants if we'll be out walking around the city a long time. Even when we go to games, I just like the security of a bunch of random pockets with Velcro. Good luck lifting my debit card, clowns! Most of the time, I don't even know which pocket it's in!

Honestly, though, (not to jinx myself, but) I've never had anyone try to pick me. Never had anyone grab my wife's purse. I've known people who say it's happened to them, but it's never happened to us. And I've been wise to the usual scams for 30+ years. When they come up to me, which has gotten rarer over the years, they learn pretty quick that I know the game.

Street scammer: "Ok. Twelve. Y-O-U-R-L-A-S-T-N-A-M-E."

Usual tourist: "Dammit. Here's a dollar." (then you're lucky if they don't snatch your whole wad and run)

Usual tourist, hoping not to get murdered if he doesn't pay: "Ok, here's a dollar. Good one."

I would never move to a place w/o having spent a fair amount of time there. Looks like you are moving from the Big Apple! If so, I assume that you and your girl are pretty streetwise already. gl on your move

Spent a couple hours walking around downtown New Orleans last night, doing a little bar hopping while waiting for our event. (BTW, $3.00 parking so much better than the $30.00 parking in that area on gamedays!) Didn't see anyone getting mugged or shot. Downtown area east of the Superdome and Loyola Ave. is actually a very nice, though.

Wow I am not going to lie I expected some negativity in some posts for sure but the overwhelming wave of "ur stupid, it is a ghetto, don't move without doing research, etc" is pretty shocking to me.

Anyway for those who asked my girlfriend has a nice job opportunity there, I am not going for no reason at all. Also I have lived my past few years mostly in ghettos honestly and my current living situation here is not ideal so for me it is addition by subtraction.

Still shocked to see mostly all negative comments. F it, gonna see how it goes! I can always pack and move again it isn't like I have a lot of stuff really in this current juncture in my life.

If you have a great opportunity there, go for it, but if you're just looking for a change of scenery and want to move south go somewhere like Nashville, Louisville, Dallas etc
I might stop in Nashville on my way down.

Sidebar, I've lived in new York for 30 years this will be my first time living far away from where I grew up. In a way I don't really care exactly where I go as long as I have a roof over my head, just trying to get some experiences really.. I think some of you may be taking this whole 'living' thing too seriously.

Or maybe I am not taking it serious enough but again it is all a matter of perspective...

Still want to thank everyone for their input even if it wasn't what I exactly wanted to hear or expecting.. But the gist I get is there is bad areas, be careful. Got it.

Man it's nothing personal clearly. I would want honest opinions from people who knew if I asked the question. New Orleans is no joke, everyone is basically just saying be careful as it's not just a certain area or neighborhood you need to watch your back in. Any situation or opportunity is what you make of it, wish ya the best.

Thanks I didn't take it personally, def not your comments anyway. There may have been a couple comments that did feel a bit pretentious maybe but I got thick skin it's all good.

Like I said thank you everyone for your input whether you actually had experience in NOLA or not lol

Like I say, probably not that much different then what you've seen in NYC or the Bronx, wherever you call home. The food in NOLA is outstanding... gunna be humid though. What do they say about NYC.... If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere! gl brother...

I live in NO area all my life. I have only lived in "new orleans" - the actual city for a few years. I would only live in a select few areas of the actual city now. I choose to live in a better area like 30 minutes away and drive to the city for events, entertainment etc. Good food and good people. Stay out of the hood and its all good.

Live a couple hours upstate. The county and area I am in is around some areas with some of the worst crime and murder rates in the country, and I have regrettably spent more than my share in these areas being a recovering addict..

Anyway bad areas are no big deal to me I just worry about how my girl will handle them. But again she is the one going for her job and did her own research I'm just going because why not I can't really end up in a worse situation than I have recently put myself in.

Lived 30 minutes outside of New Orleans about 35 years ago, inside city was bad then too.

I just went fishing last year in Lafitte, excellent fishing about 45 minutes south of New Orleans and not a worry in the world while I was there. I was surprised by how much damage is still not repaired from Katrina.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

I am in recovery as well almost 8 years. You will be fine. I never find myself on the streets in the middle of the night and never seem to see or find myself a victim of any crime. When u coming down?
