All they are doing is counting the points of intersection for each digit....such as the hundreds, tens, ones.

For those occasions where you do not have a calculator handy.

This is just a very simple way to describe what you are really doing when you multiply numbers the conventional way.

Seems easier to just multiply the old way.

There is an even faster method....

999 x 999 = (1000 x 1000) - (2 x 1000) + 1
= 1000000 - 2000 + 1
= 998001
