Guard shot during armored van robbery in West Boca

WEST BOCA – Deputies are hunting a gunman who shot and robbed an armored car guard after hijacking his van Wednesday morning, the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office said.

Police said the incident began at 9:56 a.m. when an armed man forced his way into a armored van after confronting a guard who was returning to it after picking up cash at the Cumberland Farms convenience store at State Road 7 and Sandalfoot Boulevard.

Once inside, the gunman forced the driver and guard to drive north around that neighborhood for about 15 minutes.

That ended at U.S. 441/State Road 7 and Southwest Third Street when the guard and the gunman apparently got into a struggle. One shot was fired and guard was struck in the left ankle.

The gunman then fled the van with an undisclosed amount of cash to a waiting white Chevrolet Monte Carlo and sped off with the driver.

Deputies said the armored van is owned by Premium Armored Services of Davie. The wounded guard was not immediately identified. He was taken to Delray Medical Center and was treated for a non-life threatening wound.
