Need advice: Rescinding a Job Offer..?

Hey guys,

I'm in quite the dilemma right now and could use some advice. I just graduated last week and had accepted a job offer for company A in mid-April after I thought the interviews with company B didn't go very well because they said they were full and would keep in contact. Accepted the job right away with Company A because 90% of grads don't have jobs right now, wanted to be safe rather than sorry...

Meanwhile, Company B called me early last week and said that a position had opened up after a rep recently quit and they would like to bring me in to shadow for a day... The day I went in went great and they want to offer me a position for 5,000$ more in base pay a year plus a better commission/bonus structure.. I told them I need a few days to think it over... It's about that time.. lol

Job B is clearly better for me but is it ethical to call company A and tell them I'm not going to work there anymore? Is this sort of thing common or did I go about it all wrong?? If so, how would I go about rescinding the offer to A?

Thanks for any help you guys can offer....

Companies often have a 90 day evaluation period, so it's not like you have been working at Job A with a lot of accounts/responsibilities. They can rather easily go to the next on their list and don't lose much. 10 years ago I may have looked at a situation like this differently, but now you need to look out for #1.

unless you signed a contract with Company A, why would you hesitate to take the job with Company B ?? I'd call them and simply tell them that while you appreciate the offering of the position, you found something else that you believe would be better for you. Thankyouverymuch.

Only reason I'm hesitant is my school sent me this when I inquired about it... http://www.niu.edu/Careerservices/ha...gaJobOffer.pdf

dont be suckered in to that bs from your school. You look out for yourself and if this other opportunity is better for you then you go with that one. How many companies take your situation in to account down the road when they make decisions? None...they'll get over it

Make sure you learn this lesson early and clearly, there is none more important in your career

Illinois is an at-will employment state and as such an employer can fire you anytime without reason. Likewise as an employee you can quit at any time without reason.

You accepted a job offer that was to begin on a specific date. You are choosing to sever the agreement before the start date and enter into a new agreement. Just like any company you go work for could come to you one day and say, sorry, your old compensation is no longer in place, we have change it to XXX...or reduced it by XXX%. Believe it. So since they have that power you have every right to earn as much as you can.

Realize throughout your career that being valuable is key...they can fire you at any time without reason.

You are an employee at the moment...down the line you may hire and fire people, realize that the same can and will happen. A company can make an offer and take it back, or change it on a whim.

The company you decline now may sour towards you a bit and not want to offer you a position again anytime soon, but if you are valuable they would still want you anyway.

It's perfectly normal, if uncomfortable, to sever your agreement. While it is correct that you should try to work things out ahead of time, often it is not practical. Hey....wait another 6 weeks while my other interviews flush out. Not gonna' happen!

Take THE BETTER JOB, $5k is important and if they appear equal take the $5k. But take the better job, do not take an add'l $5k and sacrifice what could be a better job.

agree with this. i wouldn't use it as leverage but it could help and company A may increase their bid to keep your services.

It's more pussification. You GOTTA look out for number 1. F*ck everyone else, especially when it comes to business. And that's what this is. This is business. YOU DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU. Period.

this is easy darrell...had the same situation

i was interviewing with 2 companies 4 years ago....job A made me an offer and I accepted because job B hadnt sent me anything.

Literally my first day at job A during training Job B called and made me an offer which was easily the best offer. It was akward but I went in and told the boss man the situation and that I cant pass up the job B opportunity. He was a little flustered and asked if I would stay for the day as to not make a bad impression of their company with the rest of my training class. I said yes but when we broke for lunch he told me to take off...havent looked back.

Take the job with company B. Show up in person to company A and tell them thank you for the job offer, but I feel like working for job B would be more suited for me. They will appreciate your honesty. Be honest with yourself and other people and you will go far in life. Good luck.

Simply be truthful. Thank company A and let them know because of the financial situation you are in another company has offered a better compensation.
It is hard and they maybe pissed or they may counter offer or they may tell you to take a hike...but in the end you did what was best for you...it is your career not theirs

Congrats on graduating
