Need some legal advice (keith, other lawyers?)

If anyone has a similar experience or is a lawyer I would appreciate any responses..

I have a clean record except a few weeks ago I was drunk at a bar and on my way out I saw that a bouncer had one of my friends in a headlock and and another bouncer was punching him in the stomach so i came up and cold clocked him in the side of the head.... (apparently my friend was being attacked because the bouncer said that the bar was closed and he had to go, upon which my friend said he would finish the drink and then leave, then the bouncer attempted to apprehend him) i left the bar immediately and then when i looked back the bouncer was yelling "i'll kill you, you're going to jail, etc.." so i start speed walking and i look back and see a cop behind me and turn behind a burrito place. he shines the flashlight on me and i immediately surrender, however during questioning she was trying to imply that i tried to jump a fense however that is 100% incorrect, I told her i left becase I was fearful the guy made threats that he was going to kill me (obv. I did not take seriously) also in my statement to the cop I told them that I pushed the guy and he fell over because of wet floors. I told them NOTHING else.

The bouncer in question has been confirmed as FIRED because in his first 3 weeks he got into 3 fights including this one, I talked to the manager a few days ago and he told me that and I am not banned from the bar.. Also the bouncer was BLACK and my friend was BLACK just if this turns into something racial.........So... I got charged with Battery and she said max fine 2,500 up to a year in jail. I have court next friday and really need some advise whether I hire an attorney or do I just tell the judge what happened and move on.. Keep in mind that Im graudating college in 6 months and will be actively pursuing a real job. Please help keith?

ps - keep the smart azz comments out of this thread plz .. thx

get a lawyer you don't want anything harmful on your record esp. since you will be trying to get a real job in the next 6 months.

absolutely positively get a lawyer. And get a good one--not some guy who hangs out in the courthouse and takes cases on the fly for $100 cash.

You will need real $$$ to retain someone who is good, but it should be the best money you've ever spent. You've got your life and career ahead of you. A criminal conviction for battery is NOT a plus on the resume'.

Good luck.

Seth: Fogell, this ID says that you're 25 years old. Why wouldn't you just put 21, man?
Fogell: Seth, Seth, Seth. Listen up, ass-face: every day, hundreds of kids go into the liquor store with fake IDs, and every single one says they're 21. Pssh, how many 21 year olds do you think there are in this town? It's called f*cking strategy, alright?

Would you get medical treatment without a doctor?
Then don't get legal treatment without a lawyer.

And I thought it was cold-cocked (not clocked).

A lawyer can get your charges at least reduced...more then likely you will convicted of something since you did just hit the guy for no reason at all.

You stated you lied in the police report which is idiotic but dont consider lying under oath cause if you are caught its a whole new ball game.

And why on earth do you even bring race into it anyways.

Time to grow up kid

Start asking for references now...

If your case is set for the docket this Friday you need to get in to see an attorney either today or tomorrow. By so doing your attorney can either decide if the case is without merit and proceed or ask for a delay to get more time to bolster your case.

Although you need to get an attorney pronto, you need to get one that is solid and experiened trying cases in front of the Judge your case has been assigned to. So call the Judge's clerk today and ask her for a list of three attorney's she would recommend for your situation. If possible ask for her to put them in the order she prefers as well. Then call all three of them today.

In my professional opinion, if you get an attorney that practices in front of your Judge all the time you will not have any problems. Although every State's laws are different and I don't know what statement's against interest you've already said to the police I believe you will probably get totally off in defense of your friend or at worst you will get a suspended sentence which will be removed from your record in a year.

Good Luck!

having a lawyer is a no brainer for this stuff, and like everyone said, get a good one with a solid reputation.

another Question..

Just got off the phone with a solid rep. , he said he'll charge me $750 for the case.. told him the situation he said he would argue that i shouldn't be convicted that I was acting in defense of my friend. He also said that since Im a student I could get a public defender that might work fine? 750 lawyer or public defender?

Spend the $750 Darrel and get some quality representation. It's not a bad price, relativley speaking. A PD isn't the route to go and leave yourself open for a possible bad outcome.

first off I may be wrong but $750 sounds like a cheap lawyer

call the courthouse clerk like kidknowspicks said and get the lawyer who your judge is familiar with

secondly darealist, you dont jump over a fense, you do play D-fense

dont confuse that pal

youll soon find out that even someone like you darealist can beat thsi case with a good lawyer
