Nevada sports books eke out win on Super Bowl betting
CARSON CITY – Betting on the Super Bowl reached $87.4 million, the highest in three years, but it wasn’t a good day for Nevada sports books.
Mark Lipparelli, chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board, said unaudited figures show sports books kept only $724,176, the second lowest total since 2002. Only the 2008 game in which the New York Giants upset New England 17-14 produced a lower result. The books actually lost $2.5 million on that game. The board said the sports books had a win percentage of 0.83 on the amount wagered on this year’s game. The sports book win on the last two Super Bowls was slightly more than 8 percent. The $87.4 million wagered in Green Bay’s win over Pittsburgh was the highest in the last two years. The total was $82.7 million in 2010 and $81.5 million in 2009. From 2005 to 2008, the amount wagered was always more than $90 million.
