New Thoughts On Barry Bonds:

As I watched the single season homerun record shattered and now the alltime homerun record ready to fall, I was totally disgusted. Not only with a man, who we all know used steroids, but with a sport that pretty much allowed it. Being a lifetime sports fanatic, I was about to just give it all up, whats the use, I asked. If records are going to fall to cheaters and the sport don't care, why should I waste my time following it anymore?

Then I began to think about it. I'm sure from the beginning of sports, men have used differnt ways to enhance their performance, that generations before them, didn't use. So why wouldn't they do it now? The more I thought about, the idea of records falling, the less I could find Bonds guilty. Let's face some facts. It has been each individual sport, that has caused most of the records to fall, not the players.

Let's start with baseball. In the old days, ballparks were huge. Which made it a lot harder to hit homeruns. They have went to lighter bats, tighter wounded baseballs, began using designated hitters. How many records have falklen because of these changes. I'm sure many, just so they can promote offense and bring up attendance. How about the NBA, the 3 point shot, the 24 second clock, to name just a couple. How many records have fallen, thanks to these changes. On the other hand in the NFL, they moved the goal posts back 10 yards, which has protected some records from falling, while at the same time they created a 16 game schedule, that was once 14 games. I'm sure the guys who had single season rushing records and 1000 yard season records from the past didn't appreciate that very much. Finally hockey ends no more in a tie and offsides penalties have been changed to promote more offense.

My final analysis is this. Is Barry Bonds anymore guilty then sports itself. He will break 2 records, but the changing of sports has broken hundreds of records. I surely wouldn't doubt that baseball was quite aware of the steroid problem, but it brought in millions, during the Maguire, Sosa battle to break Roger Maris's record and is bringing in millions again as they cram in front of tv and through the turnstiles to see Bonds break Aarons record. My final word is, progress whether good or bad is going to force changes. If Bonds is guilty, then sports is guiltier and since we the fans pay all their salaries, it makes us just as guilty. So we might as well just forget the whole issue and enjoy the game.

nice read..don't agree with some of it...but the changing of ball parks is not what made these records fall....the fact that now the avg major league hitter is over 6'2 and 200+ lbs....don't get me wrong they still have to hit the ball but they regularly hit the ball 400+ feet which would get it out of the ballpark in most older parks as well

And what about race? Not trying to be racist here, but don't you think integrating blacks into professional sports has made a bit of a difference as far as the level of competition? Remember, Babe Ruth hit all those home runs against a bunch of goofy white guys.
