Good topic guys. I'm not sure I have any insight on how much is too much or too little, but I definitely can relate a few thoughts that I think are universal.

We all have certain friends who do this, and to me it's the most annoying thing they can do.

They have money. They have an ATM card, they have a bank. And they passed those banks and ATMs on the way to whatever you are doing...but they managed to show up and not have any money with them.

They knew you did, and would loan it to them. Because you guys are friends and in fact if they asked and you said No it might make YOU look bad, in addition to them.

Lazy f-ers. Sometimes they'll even pay you back piecemeal...here's a $20, here I'll get the tab for that burger...but not just pay you back, in cash, exactly what they owe. Sometimes they "forget" to pay you back...and you get the privilege of remembering for them.

I am extremely generous with friends and family, but not with $$$. I generously offer my time, my food, my help, my home and to entertain, but rarily will I offer $$$. Somehow cash is always an inpersonal thing, and people get weird around it.
