Poker question ?- how to Balance tables ?

doing a charity thing at work -
various methods are used for balancing tables ?

expecting about a 30 player tournout , 3 tables..

Simple one?

If you are hosting a small tournament, 2 or 3 tables,
the easiest way to keep the tables even is to just watch
when one table gets 2 or more players lower than another table.

When that occurs, simply move a player from the larger table
to the smaller table.
However when you move play
you need to do that fairly.

After all, the moved player is likely at a disadvantage.
He has to learn how to play against a full table of new players,
they only have one to deal with.

There are a couple ways you can ensure you move the players fairly.

1) Random moving – deal out a deck of cards, giving one card to each
player at the big table. The player with the highest card moves to the smaller table.

When you do this you move the player to the same seat
at the new table.
So if he is sitting in seat # 5 at the old table,
he will sit at seat # 5 at the new table.
If that seat is occupied, move the player to the next open seat clockwise.

2) Button moves – To ensure that a player doesn’t get
hit with the blinds unfairly,
you can move the player on the button at the larger
table to the first open
seat to the right of the button at the short table.

3) Big Blind Moves –
The final method of moving players is to move the player
who would be the big blind during the next hand.

He moves to the open seat at the short table
which is the least number
of turns from being the big blind.

choice number 2 is the way to do it

definitely don't do number 1- you're gonna have to move quite a few people, no way you should stop the game 20 times to deal out cards...

just stay on top of it, and keep an eye on all the tables- if you see a huge hand developing where half a table might get busted at once, have a plan... know where the button is on the other tables and be ready to move a person from each or 2 people or whatever... and try to plan it such that you don't end up moving the same person a lot of times...

stop the deal on the other tables if you have to- if you have a situation where you're going to need to move more than 1 person, don't hesitate to hold everybody up for a second or two

I play in alot of the bar tourneys which get 25-50 player at them. When replacing players, they get them from the table with the most players and take the player right of the dealer. That person sits at an open seat, has choice to post a blind if needed or wait till the deal passes. If breaking up a table and you have two players going to another table, they would redraw for dealer.

really? that seems to be a cash game method...as long as the player is not on the button immediately they can be dealt in in a tournament

They aren't doing it right... That's unfair to everybody else that they get the choice to sit out. That's the way you do it in a cash game, not a tournament.
