Probably the largest sports bet ever wagered

A Betfair punter has wagered a massive $5 million on the All Blacks to win the Rugby World Cup, the UK-based betting exchange reports. The punter has banked on the All Blacks defying their “chokers” tag to take home the William Webb Ellis Cup. With the tournament nearing the quarter final stages, the All Blacks are the raging 1.71 favourites with Betfair, the world’s leading betting exchange. South Africa remains the punters’ second pick at 4.50 with Australia firming to outright third favouritism at 10.50. “This is an enormous bet. It’s certainly one of the biggest individual bets we’ve seen on Betfair and one that would normally have bookies running for cover,” said Betfair spokesman Hugh Taggart.

Well Snowman, I've opposed the All Blacks at the last few World Cups.
This time I think they have their best shot, leaning on them winning it, many people would disagree with me but thats the way I see it.
Having said that though a price of around 1.70 won't be getting any of my money, would want at least 2.10.

BTW the final isn't for 3 weeks, so a nervous wait for the mystery punter.

If the guy has that much loot to wager, I doubt it matters to him if he wins

lol they are from "black"

Dave is right the guy isnt getting the best odds for a long, tense potential of a payout. I would need higher odds, I dont know decimal odds well but I think he is laying juice (DAVE?)

Sorry Dave, but I think Sout Africa does it up

Sucker bet, not that NZ can't do it. It's just way too much juice, I would needs odds personally lol

Im sure it will circulate if NZ wins I will remember this guy. Im suprised they took such a large wager

I agree, while I like their chances of winning, the price with that juice doesn't get me excited.

With befair its not like betting with a Bookmaker its a betting exchange....so betfair won't pay him out with their own money (technically) should he win. How it works is u bet against other people. So for example in this case the money he bet he had to find someone who disagreed with him and wanted the other side.
In this case I believe it was a syndicate (hardly surprising given the amount of money we are talking!).

So that syndicate will recieve a major payout should the All Blacks not win because while he got -142 to -250 the other side (syndicate) got + money odds

But you are right, no Bookmaker would take that bet!

very very interesting

The guy laying odds will be 1000% more nervous than the "field" player

Cant wait to see how this pans out

BTW some books are known for their "publicity stunts" certain UK books especially. However I believe this one is legit.
