Protection Plans

When you buy a hi $$$$ item....say a large screen TV...do you invest in the stores protection plan for it or just go with the products warranty itself?

Buy the extended coverage. I used it on my TV 4 years after purchase. Well worth the investment.

Just stick with the products warranty, unless you are buying a product that has a history of breaking down.

Like if you keep cars long and you buy an Audi, they have some real costly repairs that will need to be done during the time you own the car, so for Audi you would buy the extra protection. Now if you did buy an Acura there would be no need for the extra protection, just change the oil and drive. The only exception here would be that if you beat the crap out of cars when you drive get the extra protection on no matter what you buy. Same would go for TV's, or in home sound systems. etc...

heres my theory.... No one would of came up with a warranty system unless they expected to earn money.

You are a gambler right?

Take a gamble, save money and skip the warranty plan. For them to give you a warranty is them trying to make you feel protected. Its just another way for them to make money.

You've hit the nail on the head. I read an article a few years ago about how hard most companies push extended warranties because it's such a huge profit center. I bought an extended warranty for my Ipod because I've already worn 2 out, but that's the only thing I'll buy a warranty for. I recently purchased a plasma from Circuit City and they started calling me at home to sell me an extended warranty. They wanted some astronomical amount, I laughed and told them to quit calling me and hung up. They basically wanted half of the purchase price, it was ridiculous.

do the research - if you're buying a quality item then no need to waste the money.

Brand name ,
Size ,
LCD or Plazma ? ...

When you buy a car do you buy their extended warranty ?

Spends thousands more ,
odds are no ...

TV's thousands less but chances are
more people do which is where they make the money ...

On a side note...my gal bought the extended warranty for her desktop printer. I told her she was wasting her money (original manufacturer's warranty was 1 year, but for $20 she got an extra 2 years tacked on). We use the printer quite a bit. Never lasts more than 1 or 2 years. Upon returning it to the store, they offer 5 or 6 other models cuz the original one is is not available anymore. And or course it's not worth repairing + the shipping costs. They also offer another extended warranty for an extra 2 years. In other words, she's getting a new printer every year or 2 for only $20. Not bad after all. Not that she planned it that way...but it's the store that offers it.

Not that this would work with big screen TVs, but they would attempt to repair it first cuz the price gap is much more.

When I bought mine, I figured a big screen is worth about $500-$1,000 per year. So I did buy the extended warranty (5 years for $300). I had peace of mind.

Would I buy an extended warranty nowadays for a big screen worth $1,400? NO WAY. Anything over $2,500 yes I would (but I would not pay more than $300 for less than 3 years of extra warranty)--so, $100 per year is a good deal on high tech above a certain amount. Don't forget that the price has my personal value. People value things differently. What's it worth to u?

Gambler would risk it...who thought of that stupid shit? Real players analyze the situation (the TV purchase) weigh the factors (chance of breaking, price of warranty, quality or warranty offered) and make a decision like a big boy.

Never understood why someone would make blanket decision on things like this...case by case basis my man.

Well whenever I would go swap or troubleshoot it was free most ofthetimes with the warranty with the store. Some can be bad and its more convenient. You get a replacement tv while yours is being fixed.

Yeah, the prices for some those wires r crazy.

They usually end up being relatively expensive so I don't.
But, salespeople often make a nice spiff on those plans in relation to what their commission is so you can usually get them to knock off money on the product almost to the point of paying for the protection plan.
