Put my dog to rest today

I never thought it would be this hard, we've had him for almost 15 years, I always half joked that he was my wifes dog, It didn't hit me until the Vet was giving him anesthesia and he flopped down, I've been a wreck all day. Seriously that little guy found his way into my heart and I didn't even realize it.

I feel for you and will be going through the same thing with the family dog soon. He is 17, turns 18 in April and is slowly on the decline. We have contemplated it a few times since he has trouble walking on some days, but eats like a horse.

We would prefer he go at home, rather then on a Vet's table as I can honestly say it would make me quite teary eyed.

Echo the sentiments of above posters. Appearrantly a dog administered anesthesia goes into a deep painless sleep even if you observe it twitching, having spasms or other side effects these are just a natural part of the body giving out. Better for an animal to pass on peacefully then live in pain. Too bad humans cant have it this way.

putting down a pet is one of the worst things ever.I found out that adopting a new pet(dog) helps ease the pain quite a bit.

I had to recently put down one of my cats (11 years). It was incredibly hard and I'm sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear this pats. It is truly one of the toughest things to do. You and your family have lost a great friend. He gave you unconditional love for 15 years and you repaid him back by not allowing him to suffer and to let him go in peace. I have had the displeasure in putting down 4 of my pups and I will never forget how I felt each time.

I agree by going out and getting another one eases the pain but he will never be forgotten in your heart. Stay strong.
