'Racist dog' ends Nigerian jobseeker's hopes

A BELGIAN businessman rejected a Nigerian job applicant because the businessman said his own dog was racist and would bite non-whites, Belgian media reported on Saturday.

The 53-year-old man Nigerian told De Standaard newspaper he arrived at the Belgian's wrought-iron business and was immediately confronted by the barking dog.

The Belgian turned the man away before he could even enter, and wrote on his labour office letter that he could not hire the man because of his colour, adding there was a risk the dog would bite him.

The local labour office has concluded that the Belgian was racist and has removed him from its list of potential employers.

“My dog is racist. Not me,” the Belgian told De Standaard.

The Nigerian, who has lived in Belgium for 32 years, said it was not the first time he had been rejected for a job because of his colour, although other employers had been more subtle.

He told the newspaper that he did not wish to lodge a formal complaint because he did not wish his family in Nigeria to hear about the case.

According to Reuters, Bruno Rampelberg, a Belgian employer, rejected Peter Adedayo Adelanwa, Nigerian man, for a job because he said that his own dog, a labrador named "Blacky," was racist against non-whites.

Adelanwa, who isn't white, submitted an application for the Belgian businessman's job and was rejected simply because the businessman feared that his dog would attack the job applicant, said Reuters.

When Adelanwa, 53, arrived at the other man's business, he was immediately met by a violent, angry, and barking dog. Little did he know that this normal annoyance would decide his fate with the company.

Right before even entering the door of the business, Rampelberg turned the hopeful employee away. Adelanwa was stunned and could not figure out why. When he asked, the employer pointed out that the dog was racist and that he could not hire him because there was a risk that the dog would attack him and any other person who was non-white.

As one could imagine, Adelanwa was furious and took this opportunity to contact the press. Through a small media frenzy, the local labor office concluded that Rampelberg was the racist one, despite his dog's actions. The labor office removed Rampelberg from its list of potential employers, severely hurting the his own business.

Rampelberg did try to defend himself by telling the press, "I can't do anything against the fact that my dog is aggressive towards colored people...my dog was traumatized."

Unfortunately, for Adelanwa, this had not been the first time something like this came up, reported Reuters. He has lived in Belgium for nearly 32 years and has repeatedly been denied jobs simply because of his skin color.

Adelanwa laughed as he said other rejectors have been more subtle and never used their dog as an excuse to not hire a non-white person.

Reuters also stated that Adelanwa did not file a formal complaint because he did not want his family in Nigeria to come across it or hear about it.
