Coroner: Bubba Smith Died From Overdose of Diet Pills, Heart Disease

Charles "Bubba" Smith was a big guy—as we all know from his role as Hightower in the Police Academy movies, those funny Miller Lite commercials and his terrific NFL Pro Bowl career.

Unfortunately, it appears his desire to shed some of that weight led to his Aug. 4 death at the age of 66.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office confirms to E! News that initial autopsy results show the football great turned actor died as the result of acute phentermine intoxication combined with heart disease.

Phentermine is the generic name for a drug supplement used to speed weight loss in overweight people by decreasing appetite as long as they exercise regularly and maintain a low-calorie diet.

According to Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter, Smith's ongoing condition of atherosclerosis, or the thickening of the artery walls of his heart, along with a history of hypertension were also contributing factors in his passing.

The manner of his death however still remains undetermined. The body of the 6-foot-7 NFL star was found in his Los Angeles-area residence, and it was initially thought he succumbed to natural causes.

A final coroner's report is expected to be released in the next two weeks.

Just curious how much you weigh and your height? Are drugs really necessary to lose weight unless your really obese. I wouldn't take any supplement like that after reading that Bubba Smith took it and he never seemed out of shape when I say him.

6'1", could stand to lose 30.

graduated (a long time ago) @ 215 w/o any fat. played hoops til i was 30. got married, have 3 kids, gained 60. what i had in my chest/arms, dropped about a foot.

i was on phentramine 2-3 yrs ago for 6-8 months. lost 30 over the winter but i also joined the YMCA and actually went 4-5 times a week. also, cut out the beer.

was steady at 230ish until the last 3 months, back up to 250. my shorts/pants i wore all summer are getting a little snug so i went to my dr. he gave me a prescription and i also went back to the Y Monday and going again tonight--and will continue over the winter.

baseball starts towards the end of march, early april...gotta get down so my ump clothes will fit again.

sorry for the rambling. long story short, this fat-ass gotta lose weight. and i will.

You graduated at 215lbs and no body fat now 250lbs at 6'1". Doesnt sound like you need drugs to take care of that.
