It is famous because before the Interstate System was created, it was the main road from Los Angeles to Chicago and points in between. BAck in those days, when planes were not nearly as popular as they are today, this was the road that millions of travelers used to get from point A to point B in that part of the country. The original route goes through many small towns. Some of them have tried to save relics from those days as "Historical Buildings". That is why you see sign near off ramps on I 15 or 40 that states. "U.S. Route 66 Historical Route".

ahhhh...most movies I watched that had Route 66 in it was through small Mid-Western towns such as in the State of New Mexico. Lots of pow-pow went on and many vanished without a trace. Not to mention the parties along the way.

It also reminds me that I've been looking for the band KEEL's "Rock'n'Roll Outlaw" tune on CD for a good 20 years now, and also the soundtrack and movie to it...It's an import in Canada (no idea why)--very hard to get.

...and long live Route 66 by the Rolling Stones.

It's coming back to me now. This movie "Dudes" started in Chicago and trecked down Route 66 to Los Angeles.

I guess it all depends on who writes the article. Sometimes I read it's a South-West State, but most often I read it's a Mid-West State. Most Indian Wars look at it as Mid-West cuz it's a continuation of adjacent States (N & E)...but physically, yes, it shares the South-West look and feel with the deserts maybe.

People in California consider Arizona, New Mexico and Texas as Southwestern States.
