School Clerk Accused Of Stealing Principal's Credit Cards
Detectives: Woman Used Card To Buy Bras, Candles, Other Items

POSTED: 4:14 pm EST February 14, 2006

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- A high school data clerk is accused of stealing the credit cards of the school’s principal and guidance director and using the plastic to buy bras, candles, clothing, and assorted household items.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives said that on Feb. 7, surveillance cameras captured data processing clerk Sharon Waldo as she went from one office to another at Pompano Beach High School.

Detectives said the video shows Waldo, 49, as she takes a wallet from the office of the school’s Guidance Director Kathryn Cardoso, brings the wallet back to her desk, rifles through it and steals a credit card, then returns the wallet to its original location. BSO said that on the day before, Waldo had gone into the Assistant Principal Sabine Phillips’ office and stolen her wallet.

On Feb. 8, Cardoso and Phillips reported the thefts, but detectives said that by then, Waldo had already gone on a shopping spree.

Receipts uncovered by investigators show Waldo spent nearly $800 on shopping sprees at Stein Mart, K-Mart, and Sears. Waldo used the stolen credit cards to buy underwear, bath products, clothing, scented candles, and even a steam cleaner.

When investigators confronted Waldo with the surveillance video and store receipts, they said she confessed. Detectives said that they recovered many of the illegally obtained items from Waldo’s home.

Waldo faces more than a half-dozen theft charges and could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of them all.

Those items she bought were necessities. Its not like she went on a spree and partying all night on the cards. She is a thrifty woman who shops at KMart to save a few bucks. Otherwise the victims would be on the hook for more than the actual $800 she spent.
