Senate Bill 5
Hey guys being a teacher and coach, I was curious if any of you have heard of this Senate Bill 5 that they are trying to do in Ohio which is where I teach and in a lot of other states as well. In short they are trying to break up unions and Collective Bargaining. This means that teachers will not make hardly anything (which is how it is now but is going to be worse) and also effects police officers and firmen. Some details I will share from our Union President from an email. They may even do away with pay scales meaning that myself in going back to College Online and getting my Masters I wont make any more money. Normally when you get your masters in Education you make about 10,000 dollars more a year. I wanted to hear your thoughts and if you guys have heard about this. Every teacher here at my school in Ohio is so upset over this, it is ridiculous. I like to believe that other teachers are like myself that go into teaching for the right reasons and want students to succeed in the classroom and in life. I also Coach as well and do not do it for the money. I enjoy teaching phys.ed and coaching and do not do it for the money because as it is I am part of the Middle Class. The point is if this passes the kids are going to be greatly affected by this. Who is going to want to go to College for thousands of dollars and only make 20-25 thousand a year and be in debt from student loans when they can make this at Mcdonalds or Burger King. This is so messed up and wanted to share it here at the mall. Take a look at this and tell me your thoughts... Thanks all.
The more one reads into SB 5, the more money it will cost us as teacher. In this bill it reads: no CB for salary (which means most likely no pay increases and possible pay decreases), the max the school can pay for health insurance is 80%, which means the teacher will pay at least 20% and 20% of our health insurance is 1000s of $, the school board will not be able to pick up the 14% STRS, which means each teacher will need to pay the now 24% and maybe soon 27% for you STRS! We were told before the elections that this was going to happen if these leaders were elected, they were elected and now they are following through.

You should be mad my man.
It has been quietly going on for a while, but they have sure ramped up their efforts against the American worker. Do we continue to stand on the sidelines, and let the rape continue??? Or do we finally begin to fight back a little???

It will be interesting to see how these things play out in Wisconsin and Ohio. In the end they need to find somewhere in the middle to meet like any negotiation. The system is clearly broke and it can't continue to go on the way it is.
You mentioned your employer currently pays 100% of your premium. What type of deductibles do you have from there? Personally I think they should look into the pension plans of ALL government positions. Some of the pension plans are unreal which I believe is the big money burner with people living longer. I feel teachers are underpaid the way it is but at the end of the day there is only so much to go around like any business. Find a jon with a private school. |

Here in California most teachers, regardless of length of service get a layoff notice at the end of the year, meaning they are never sure if they will have a job in the fall. Most counties have a forced "flex" friday, meaning every other friday they have off with no pay. Gov. Brown just announced a hiring freeze for all state jobs. Sister is about to graduate with a degree in Education and nobody is hiring, its rough out here. It is only going to get worse here because of the massive deficit and the amount owed to the pensions. It is going to get real ugly here when that day comes.

I agree the system is broke but I get sick and tired of seeing the American worker taking the brunt of the blame. These politicians aren't taking any pay cuts or benefit reductions plus they receive top notch health care, generous pension's,and living expenditures that they don't deserve.

It is the pension plans that are out of hand. Once anyone is "tenured" they are guaranteed a pension. For the City of Los Angeles, you are "tenured" after 10 years of service, and can begin to collect after your 55th birthday. That is simply suicidal. We are talking about millions of people here. For the Los Angeles Police Department, you are talking in the neighborood of an additional 20 million dollars per year in retirement payouts, and that is just for one department. Can you imaging the total cost to the City? The give away must stop. The pensions must be trimmed. Free Medical must be stopped. The Unions have run amok.
In New York City, teachers receive a ridiculously high salary, and only actually teach a few hours a week. The rest of the time is spent working at Union Headquarters, where they get an additional salary. While they are screwing around at Union Headquarters, substitute teachers have to be hired to fill in for them. That is what the unions have done to the economy of Cities, States, and the Nation.
