Serious Post: Any Tips On Negotiating A New Job Offer??

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any tips or techniques in negotiations.. Just would like to hear the malls opinions. Was debating to this job offer from Booz Allen Hamillton as a Systems Engineer.

My salary would increase by 10K, but the benefits would amount to the same.

My advice is if you are happy where you are, ask for the moon in negotiations, you just might get it. Everything is negotiable.

use the new offer as leverage if possible to remain where you are but at a higher salary

Just an example, my brother is an accountant and had a job feeler from Northwest Airlines. He went to the interview more as a courtesy as he was happy where he was.

He threw out a bunch of requirments for him to take the position including salary, travel benefits. etc. thinking there was no way they were going to meet it. They not only met it, but gave him more than even he expected.

He is now a corporate big wig there and I get to travel quite often because of that

goterps, when going into an interview, let the interviewer do the talking. make sure to ask questions. ask about the family picture on his desk, his golf game if you see a bag of clubs, etc. Job interviewers, all they hear all day long is people talk. "I am good at this, I did this in school, im qualified because blah blah blah" It gets tiring. The most beautiful thing to all people is their own voice. Let him use it and it will be the interview he remembers. Another good reason for doing this is companies are always looking for people who know how to listen. In this TV, internet, cell phone age, nobody knows how to listen anymore. make sure your interviewer knows you are a good listener.

nice... went to an open house two weeks ago at Booz.. passed along my resume and had an on the spot interview with the hiring manager.. then a week later i get a call for a more formal interview.. looks promising i think.. then they send me an offer letter upping my current salary by 10K and give me the same benefits.. i am really thinking of taking it..

i was also told, that if u ask for too much, they have some many applicants, they will rescind their offer.. dont want that too happen.
