not that I know much about this stuff...
But I know this is what my landscaper guy uses... and not a problem with grubs or crab grass... we had some bug in the neighbourhood that was in the trees and the following year (this is maybe 2 years ago) everyones grass on the street was infested with crabgrass and some kind of purple looking grass weed thingy and grubs but for two years now nothing and this is the stuff that was used... this is from Scotts Turf Builder..

Here is the link... if you have a Lowes or Home Depot they should have this...

i thatch my lawn every winter and seed than also..
lowes and homedepot sell all 5 steps together..i do 6 steps a year and my grass is as green as they get..I put down starter fertilizer now and i seed and lime at the same time..i pay the extra 2.00 a bag and get the lime pellets instead of the powered..i also use kentucky shade and sun seed..it runs me around 40.00 a bag. for the huge bag..i seed rake , it all in..stamp on it.. water it.than seed again on top of it...than starting in 6 weeks i start all my steps..with watering it everyday...... most weeks i have to cut my lawn 2 times but i enjoy it so its no big deal to me sometimes...if you seed you want to use starter fert or if u dont and use the regular fert it;ll kill ur new seed instantly...

ill start step 1 around the2nd or 3rd saturday in may and take it from there..I also never ever water my lawn after 9am..i try and water my lawn every other day for 1.5 hours on each section ..i try and set it for around 6am every day..if we get no restrictions i try and water everyday..

Are you using a pre-emergent for crabb grass or are you spraying already established crabb grass ? I have a Pre-emergent I use on crabb grass but it has to be on in the month of Febuary. I grow only cool season turf grass and depending on where you are things could be different in your area. With all the rain we are getting in Northern California most of my turf may flood away soon. The weather is the $hits and I wish I would have stayed in Australia longer. Hope this info helps. GL

It is normally not recommended to use a crab-grass, or any type of lawn weed removal product until at least 60 days after planting new grass seed.
The germination percentage of newly planted seed will be greatly lowered by the use of such granular chemical treatments. Its pointless really.
Systemic sprays such as Round-Up , Spectracide, etc...sprayed onto the crabrass repeatedly over a period of time, will allow you to plant seed and work on the crab-grass problem at the same time. The systemic spray will kill only the material that absorbs it and becomes defunct after reaching the soil. Crab-grass is a persistent weed but can normally be handled with 2-3 applications over a 1 week period of dry weather. Spraying 24-48 hours prior to rain produces the best results. Weed & Feed, a popular product will prevent germination of newly planted grass seed if used at the same time. If you have crab-grass mixed heavily in all areas of the lawn, you are better off replacing the entire lawn area. If you have annoying patches, simply spray the areas a few times with a systemic weed and grass killer, remove the dead crab-grass roots, scratch the area up with a steel rake, seed, and then apply a thin layer of compost, peat, or straw.
You should fertilize at the same time, but not with a product that prevents or kills lawn weeds. We recommend simply using a seed starter fertilizer, very cheap ones contain basically the same chemicals as your brand name products, in this case.

Which way to go first, depends on the situation though tross?
Patience is what it takes either way. Describe what you have now and I will try and help you better cool mod.

Ok heres my situation..

Sections of my front yard is pretty much all dirt ( Due to 2 huge trees which gives those areas no sunlight) but other sections of my front yard are fine... so i step 1'd the fine areas with the Crab Grass Preventer..( not a spray ) and raked 1/4 inch deep and planted seed in the dirt/shaded areas. i have sidewalks that pretty much separate the two and i made sure the seed and preventer didnt interfere with each other ..

next i'll go over the whole front yard with the turfbuilder?? 60 Days i'm thinking..

Its the shade and the 2 big trees sucking up all the rain trossi, both grass killers. Each difficult.
You may be screwed...lol...
I have had the same problem in my lawn for quite some time in one area.
After trying over and over with the shade seed mixes, watering, and everything else...I fired up a chain-saw and cut a big f'ing Maple tree down and got some sun in here.
3 years later ( serious ) I am growing some grass in that area.
If you got big trees blocking out the sunlight, even sodding will die. Sodding is buying rolls of grass turf, like they do on grass sport fields and placing it in those damaged areas after proper soil preparation and conditioning.
Sometimes over the years, we have had contractors place entire sod lawns into shady areas, for wedding pictures, events, and for new home-shows, and see them die out a few weeks later, for lack of sun and water.
You may be pretty much screwed bro, but if you are married the wife will at least think you are trying and do something about it.
My advice, save the money on that stuff. Kill the tree, we need sunlight for an absolute minimum of 4 hours per day, 6 really but wanted to give you some hope !
