XM, Sirius announce merger
The two satellite radio operators will combine in a merger of equals, leaving Parsons as chairman and Karmazin as CEO.
February 19 2007: 3:15 PM EST

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Rivals XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. and Sirius Satellite Radio announced Monday they would enter into a merger of equals, creating a satellite radio giant.

As part of the deal, XM Chairman Gary Parsons would remain chairman of the combined firm, while Sirius' Mel Karmazin would assume the role of CEO.

I rememember Howerd Stern going off about XM, and how Sirius is much better.

XM had two choices. Fold or merge..

Will be surprised if this goes through, though at the same time I am pleased because this event is why I have been waiting to buy a satellite radio. No way they were getting my dollars when each carrier had exclusive contracts with diff. sports and personalities.

With tv I don't have to choose between satellite and cable because satellite has exclusive rights to the NFL while cable has exclusive rights to MLB. I shouldn't have to go through that with radio either.

it would have been a buy if you bought siri on Friday, chances are it will be up in premarket and you will miss your chance to buy before the run up.

Actually, with DirecTV's deal with the MLB, that's exactly what's going to happen. Digital Cable won't be able to offer the Extra Innings package anymore.

Looks like some media is moving forward while others move backward...

There are FCC implications here. It is not permitted under current legislation. They need to rewrite the laws for this merger to go through.

Cramer is right here.
