when I first got my dog, he would do the same thing, then I kept tell him to 'drop it'...I would force it out of his mouth and kept saying 'drop it' and when he did I gave him a treat...took awhile but now now he understands 'drop it'....not sure how other dog owners teach it, but that's how I did it....

Throw the first stick and let your dog go after it. When your dog starts to come towards you, ask your dog to drop it. 2 If your dog does not drop the stick, stop paying any attention to your dog and take out the second stick. 3 Start to have fun with the second stick. Toss it up in the air. Act like you're having a great time with the second stick. Keep doing this until your dog looks at you. If you've done this step correctly, your dog will drop the stick that she has and look up at the one you have. 4 As soon as your dog drops her stick, show the stick you're holding to your dog. As soon as your dog focuses on the stick that you're holding, throw it. 5 Repeat the process when your dog comes back to you. Within a short period of time, you'll have your dog retrieving for you.

just a couple of notes. make sure the dog sits before he drops it and before you throw it again. I have mine make sure he drops it right on my feet or I wont throw it again. I have a golden retriever, and it is their nature to fetch/retrieve. So i didnt have to teach him. 2 things to be careful with. 1, if its hot out, you may have to force the dog to take a break. I know mine will go on forever even if he is about to pass out. If you are playing on/near the water. Make sure you give them a break and you dont throw it past their ability to swim. Some dogs wont care about anything but fetching, and they may go into a situation they cant get away from. |

Dog 1 always drops the toy then runs where he thinks I will throw it
Dog 2 wants to play tug-of-war with it never could break him of it so that's what we do If dog 1 and 2 are playing dog 2 takes it away from dog 1 little fuker

Kramer good info above. The way I teach them is with dummy throwers. You can hand throw them or launch them. They help keep the dogs mouth soft. Something you didn't mention.
If using a stick which is bad for their teeth and or gums throw the stick and when the dog returns use "one word commands" Drop works well for me. If the dog does not drop the stick stick your knuckles into the front of the dogs mouth and roll your hand in taking the dogs teeth off of the stick. I never get another item I stick to them knowing that in the end the stick is mine. Never chase the dog. Chasing the dog is what they want. It helps if you get down and look them eye to eye. ALso never rip the toy from the dogs mouth. By rolling your hand into their mouth it makes them release the toy because they don't want to bite you. And if this fails smoke a fat one and talk the dog into learning a new trick. Friend of mine has a lab that he can point his finger at and go bang. Dog falls over as if it was dead. Its funny as hell and his wife is the one that gets credit for teaching the dog. I imagine she was pretending the dog was her husband. But then thats another fatty and another day.

just telling it like it is , maybe beacause they have 2 kids in scool ,soccer , at nights , and keep the dog in the house in a cage don't walk the dog enough? i've never asked , ( none of my business , not my dog) they just let her out , close the door , and if i'm outside she'll come over to me.. maybe that explains it better cause they aren't outside with her when i am ?
